PA is going forward with vouchers, the pilot program if you want to call it that will be allowing students in the 150 worst districts in the state to take their state funds in the form of a voucher and apply to any school.... public or private.

The key here is you're empowering the parents to decide what schools are worthy of getting funded, it introduces competition for those funds. Why would you think that wouldn't work? It's a bit different when your job is on the line. The students along with their funding will go to better performing schools, poorly performing schools lose their funding and go bye bye.

I think it can't hurt. Competition will drive up quality.
Right now you have public education and the only alternative is private school which many cannot afford so you really have no alternative for your tax dollars.

I say give it a shot. It can't get any worse than it is today....teach to the test to get the kids to pass to get the Fed dollars. Rinse and repeat.
Do the kids learn ? Some, but most have only learned that single path to an answer on a bubble sheet. They don't learn the concept behind the test question..just how to eliminate the obvious wrong answers and guess on the rest.

Not everyone can afford the costs even with vouchers, so Millions of children would be left behind. Also there are not enough private schools to take in all the children even if they could all afford it, again Millions left behind. You do not throw out the system, you Fix It.

If they had the full $12K+ including the state and local funding they most certainly could attend just about any school they wanted. As it is the state funding is about half. The voucher would certainly be enough to cover the cost of some private schools even at half, primarily these schools are in the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh areas and would be the poorest students in the state in most cases. If this wasn't going to work the unions and school boards wouldn't be fighting it tooth and nail like they are.

Yes and this will fix it, I did mention they could use these funds for public schools? They aren't throwing out the whole system, just the bad apples.

They were quite smart in how they are going about this because just about every argument you have ever heard against vouchers is addressed.

If the demand is there, more private schools will open. Besides, some will choose to stay in the public schools, which will probably get better as a result of a little competition. Worth a try.

The demand seems to be there. In Texas alone there's 56K on waiting lists for Charter Schools and 120K are currently attending Charter Schools.

Seems to work in the areas of DC where it was allowed before the liberals attempted to shut it down. Most noteable were the higher graduation rates of those students whose parents took advantage of the DC voucher program. Additionally, the financial savings was significant.

NCLB is mandating perfection in schools by 2014..EVERY child will pass their tests..NO ONE is left behind.
And you wonder when you read of schools falsifying test scores. Now you know why..there's a gun to their heads...pass the kids or you get NO MONEY.

Why is it a bad law is never repealed..just bandaided over and over and over ?
Because they believe in unicorns, fairies and no child is born stupid. Some kids are just plain stupid. It's a fact, get used to it.
