Actually, there are countries where church tax is taken right out of your pay check. Germany is one, unless you declare yourself an atheist (amazing number of atheists in Germany today...). Some moslem countries take "Zakat", or a tithe, out of your pay check. Saudi Arabia is one.

When I was growing up my family attended a Catholic church that published the names of people who contributed over a certain (yearly) amount in the church bulletin...My parents never felt that this was right. They felt that donations should be kept private...One year our name was not included in the list even though we always donated more than the designated amount. My Dad threw a fit and called the rectory to complain...Parishioners who contributed over a certain amount received a box of envelopes for their weekly donations...When the collection boxes were passed around it was easy to detect the regular donors because they used the church envelopes. People who didn't go to church very often or people who were (supposedly) "poor" dropped change and loose dollar bills into the collection boxes.
