Not all of them. Practically all countries in the world are having some financial problems, but certainly Denmark, Germany, Switzerland ..... in fact most except the 5 PIIGS are doing quite well. Certainly better than that libertarian paradise of Somalia. Other socialist/capitalist blends around the world such as Australia and New Zealand are doing quite well also. That seems to be because they do not allow a few wealthy hogs to live off the confiscated production of the many people who do the work. You know, the ones on the assembly lines or the ones fighting fires ........ not the ones eating the cannolis and sipping lattes in the boardroom.

Have you ever heard of the word "propaganda"? It's a word that most Americans seem to believe isn't relevant to them. I've heard that same sort of propaganda and used to believe it when I was much younger and more gullible ....... until I got on the internet and was actually able to question people about how bad their healthcare is in the nations with a universal system.

I would say that roughly 90% or more of people who had experienced life under both the US and another country, said they preferred to be under the universal system. The very few who like their US experience more had very good jobs with excellent private insurance. But that's just my experience ....... you might do the same. Simply start threads asking about the best national healthcare system people have lived under. Don't load the question, simply ask it in an evenhanded unemotional way. You might be very surprised at the responses.

Crooks, those high tax rates took place at a time when the U.S. economy did not face the competition from Europe and East Asia, as it has experienced in the last 30 or so years.

There are so many other ways of imposing tax besides the (earned) income tax. There are estate taxes, capital gains taxes (the REAL way to relieve the upper class of their money), land taxes, exit taxes, luxury taxes, and amending trust law.

Unsurprisingly, tax law in general protects the rich. A politician has 3 grades of supporters: the ideologues/attack dogs, the voting proles, and the bankers. Our current set of tax laws and allowable trusts are, in essence, a thanks to the "bankers." I use "bankers" as a catch-all for whatever rich personalities bankroll the politician.

Perhaps, but we were at war.

So you're defending income inequality and the fact that 400 Americans hold more wealth than the rest of us (since Reagan) how?

If you're one of those 400 than I respect your position.

If you're not, then you've been duped

So, you think that success should be punished rather than admired?

The triumph of right wing propaganda..it should be studied by psychologists as it is one of the most brilliant sucker plays in American history.

You have people making 60K talking the same talk that only Texas oil billionaires did back in the 1920's. Taxes are "penalties", or "stealing", "wealth re-distribution". They believe things like European mixed economies are "Socialist" and "less free" than us.

Have you ever been to Scandanavia? You should see how hard a Swede or Dane laughs when they hear a right wing moron on Fox say that they have less freedom than we do..while they are visiting the US on a one year world travel after graduating college and not having $100K in student loan debt hanging over their heads, covered by their countries health insurance if they twist their ankle climbing up Pike's peak. No freedom there, get back in the bread line Bjorn!!

It's really warped when you step back from it, the complete nonsense that people in this country have bought.
