I know someone who won $5.1 million in the CA lottery. It's real.

Not necessarily, A guy in my town has won it twice, the first time he won around 7 million and then about 3 yrs later, he won 20 million. These were the BIG lotteries back in the 80s and 90s.

The original "lottery" was run by the mafia and called the "numbers game".

The Government shut it down-made it illegal and then states created their own versions with worse odds.
Yes-the mafia operated a more honest lottery.

For as many winners as thier supposedly are in a year we should all know of at least one or several people that hit the big jackpot. That tv show could just be actors acting to make money and keep us interested in playing. I say its very possibly a ponzi but If u want to play your buying the idea of being rich for a little while.

And what part of the science of statistics tells you the size of the prize affects whether anyone wins or not?

Two big jackpot winners every week is 104 per year. What makes you believe "we should all know" one of 104 people out of 300,000,000+?

It's real, but only crisis actors can win.

I've always said that if its ever revealed to be fixed and the top prize was rigged, I'm going to do two things. One, I'll NEVER pay state taxes again. I'll just demand a refund of everything I paid for that year and every year hence.
Two, I'll go up to some state forest I frequent and take possession of 10 acres of road frontage land and put a cabin on it. Yeah, and it would be so more costly to not let me have my way.

They don't need to rig it, your odds of winning are so low in the first place. You might as well just flush your cash down the toilet before you spend it on the lottery.
