Can anyone here on CD enlighten the rest of us as to just how the ACLU chooses the cases it chooses to defend? How does any particular case come to their attention? Is it by referral from someone?

I would assume that the person needing defense would request such from the ACLU division of the state in which in happened.
That's how it's going to go in a country where 'civil liberties' actually means something. We have to suck it up and take the bad with the good, sometimes.
Still, it rubs me the wrong way to see the ACLU defending the Westboro Church.
