China on track for modern military by 2020: Pentagon - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/pentagon-sees-china-military-gains-deployment-years-away-181106788.html - broken link)

2020. I wonder what they will do with all the rare earth metal monopoly. I wonder how the British felt in 1911 at the height of their power.

a lot of bluster about pretty much nothing. even at the rates of pay china has, it is expensive to build stealth aircraft, carrier battle groups, etc. add to that the required training to use these weapon systems. it costs the US several billion to build less than 200 F22 raptors, B2 stealth bombers run about $500 million EACH, a carrier also runs in the millions to build. and then there are the support systems for these weapons, tanker aircraft, cruisers, destroyers, submarines, etc. china might be able to get a tiny percentage of modern equipment operational by 2020, but it will be a heavy cost on their treasury. and if they are truly going to compete with the US military, then you can multiply that cost by a factor of better than 100, and even china cant afford that in such a short period of time.
