AK ain't exactly south of much. The rest of the list is though so whatever. Spent some time in the South and I honestly have not seen anything so radically different from anywhere else in terms of courtship, dating or marriage. Men and women are men and women regardless of geography. Higher numbers of divorces in these states? Im not convinced it means much of anything. Sheesh....not a day goes by somebodys getting divorced somewhere.
The attempt of this thread to paint southern states[ or GOP states...whatever] az somehow totally populated by homophobic hypocrites is a miserable fail in my mind. I just ain't buying it. Pretty lame attempt actually.
Atleast here in Jersey, it's fairly common for people to get married in their late 20s-mid 30s or not get married at all. A lot of it has to do to with a more face-paced and career-orientated lifestyle, and many people put off getting married or having kids because of high COL. The same isn't true in the South. People marry younger, more people actually marry, and you can actually be able to afford to raise a family in a middle class lifestyle with a household income of as little as 40k/year in most the American South.
Another huge contributing factor to higher divorce rates in the South is religion. I know it's counter intuitive, but evangelicals and Baptists have higher divorce rates than other Christains. This has been known for awhile.
^The difference between Baptists and other Christian denominations is marginal. That site also listed baby boomers as being 33-52 years old, which left me scratching my head.
But the moral standards are higher in those states.

Way too many closet cases that's for sure; just look at the sales for viagra. lol. All these men need viagra just to have sex with their big haired pear-shaped Tammy Faye Baker look-alike wives.

Baptists, in this part of the south are vastly different than Catholic and other churches....also as another post above mentioned the COL is lower but they tend to have many children at a younger age, ("abstinence" is still taught in the poorest counties of Appalachia)
People are against gay marriage because it will harm the institution of marriage -wouldn't you say that divorce also harms the institution of marriage, then?

The article is ten years old, tyler... I could poke around for something mroe recent, but didn't want to bother with it. I've seen these figures in several sources.
Baptists are pretty different than Episcopalians, but are pretty similar to Methodists. Southern Baptists have more in common with evangelicals than they do with American Baptists. American Baptists might as well be Presbyterians.
The distinction that the article is getting at (which is an accurate one) is what I refer to as "low church" and "high church" which goes back to the splits in Aglicanism -- of course, the Baptists as kwe know them would have been called dissenters back then.
Southern Baptists and Evangelicals -- a.k.a not so called "mainline" churches -- have higher divorce rates.
I think a lot of this has to do with the fact that people in the South tend to marry at a younger age and date less prospective spouses before getting married compared to other regions of the US.
This right here. Also, the fact that the religious climate puts such an emphasis on virginity until marriage probably results in couples marrying because they had unwed sex, and sometimes a pregnancy puts the couple at the altar, to "do the right thing before God." Getting married to someone because of cultural pressure or bad circumstances isn't a great indicator of marriage longevity, especially once some years have passed by and one or both of them starts feeling regrets at being tied down.
