Just an embarrassment.

A video is circulating on the Korean Internet of a black gentleman yelling at and threatening an elderly Korean couple.

His violent behavior was the result of him misunderstanding the elderly man’s comment to him. The elderly man reportedly said “니가 여기 앉아” (a sign of consideration) but not knowing Korean, the man in question interpreted “니가” as the N-word which led to his violent outburst.

*The video in question is at the bottom of this article. Apparently our culprit learned “개새끼야” but couldn’t be bothered to learn simple pronouns. Definitely North American, but if his hair is any indication he’s definitely not a soldier.

The suspect, according to police, said he became angry after he felt insulted by the man for telling him to “shut up” instead of asking politely.

“The suspect said that he felt humiliated by Seon’s words, and it really fired him up,” a Bundang Police official said. “He didn’t deny the assault, so we will charge him soon without detention.”

Police added that the suspect was willing to apologize to Seon. The suspect is from Pennsylvania and has been working as an English teacher in Bundang for six months.

A day after the incident, several video clips, taken by passengers, appeared on major Web sites, including Naver and YouTube. On YouTube, the clip was viewed 217,212 times in a day, and many upset commenters demanded strict punishment. Some blamed the passengers for not trying to stop the suspect.

That guy is probably in a Korean jail now and not very happy or boastful. He seems drunk.

Edit: was writing before seeing EdwardA's post. I also was surprised no one intervened when he was bullying the woman.

He's his own worst enemy. I hear people who go to Korea and Japan to teach English make around 50K a year. This guy probably lost his job.

The guy is a punk A$% B$%^&*. He intimidates an asian couple knowing that he can get away with it. I guarantee he'd never try that with anybody he thought would have a shot at standing up to him and beating the crap out of him.
Anybody that angry and unstable has either a mental illness or a drug abuse problem. Why are subways always the scene of insane thugs and trash getting into fights and arguments?

I find it odd that it would be posted as either political or controversial, but I suspect you are right, it's just another CD post of "OMG look at those black people misbehaving!"

And as if Koreans themselves don't get all up in each other's faces yelling, arguing, and at times coming to blows. Watch some student strikes or find the video of Korean Buddhist monks from different groups fighting each other with sticks.

I'm not defending this guy's behavior at all. To provide context though, I have been told by many friends who have been stationed in Korea that Koreans are racists ... not toward black people in particular, but toward all non Koreans, including whites. I have been warned if I go there that the daily racism is taxing and burdensome. This guy misinterpreted what was said to him, but he undoubtedly deals with openly racist attitudes and behaviors routinely. (For example, I have been told its very common for restaurants to refuse service to whites.. and I would presume blacks too.) He may have just snapped.

And again, THAT DOES NOT EXCUSE ATTACKING OLD PEOPLE. This guy should be embarrassed and ashamed for himself. If I could, I would force him to watch himself acting like that in a room of people telling him how cowardly and foolish he looks "bucking up" on an old man and defenseless old lady until I was sure he got it ... or at least got that absolutely no one was impressed with his behavior.
