Only on television do I hear the term African-American. All the blacks I know tend to refer to themselves and others of their race as black.
"Black" is fine but "colored"--seriously? I can understand why "African-American" sounds strange if you're referring to Black people in other countries, but "colored" has been a racist term for decades now.
ETA: To be more specific, I still think it would be fine to call someone born and raised in America who then moved to another country African-American, but it would seem strange to call someone who, for example, was Black and born and raised in Germany, any sort of hyphenated American.

THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE in meaning between "colored" and "people of color," the latter being used regularly by blacks.
There's a huge difference. "Colored" assumes all there is to a person is their blackness. "Person of color" acknowledges that someone is a person first, and then Black (or whatever other race).

If that is really true then the NAACP needs to change their name. As long as there is an advocacy group by and for for blacks that uses the term "colored people" in its name I can't see how it is racist.
i dont think you're supposed to talk about Savoir Faire that way. the Mods get testy
You can probably look for a nasty sounding message from one of the liberal 'mods'.
They have no sense of humor when you attack one of their own .. liberals.
This site is nothing more than an extension of the DU or possibly the HuffPo where making a leftist look .. really, really bad or worse .. 'clueless' .. is frowned upon!
(I have the points to prove it)

I agree--it would be a good idea for them to change their name. But one organization keeping their name doesn't automatically make a term "not racist." It's pretty obvious that despite its name, the NAACP advocates for Black people and people of other races--something that is also right in its name. (The second A is for "Advancement.")

Instead of jumping on the bandwagon to bash the mods, why don't you READ the posts?
kshe95girls' post referred to Beck, not SF.
Billy Lovec's post inaccurately insinuated that kshe95girl's post referred to SF.
Now you've picked it up.
Is this how those idiotic rightwingnutjob chain emails get started?
what do you think the "C" in the acronym NAACP means?
