If you are in the City of Austin, you didn't have a choice.
They installed them starting 2 years ago. No more meter reader.

Windsor, UK has smart meters. No one tried to shut off the appliances of my gf's house nor did electricity or gas bills skyrocket. You actually prepay for the amount of utilities you want to use in England, sort of like topping up a pre-paid cell phone.

Winter of 2011 we had a heavy freeze causing the state utility to implement rolling blackouts, 15 minutes, each hour.

Waking up to my PC rebooting after power came back on then realizing what was going on at the next blackout, I called the electric company, pressing ONE for RESIDENTIAL. My electricity was back on within 2 minutes and remained on for the rest of the day.

The utility was able to restore my service immediately due to my smart meter.

Which means they were blacking you out without your consent until you called them

As I understand it, the smart meters actually measure electricity going to your home instead of electricity that is used in your home... this way the electric companies make even more money.... hehehehe

Looks like you owe on a lot of back service.

It happened to me a few years back. They said my mechanical meter hadn't be working properly, so I owed them $1600 for the previous two years.

They threatened to cut off all power if I didn't pay IMMEDIATELY!
