The recent announcement that California's unemployment again nudged up to 12 percent—second worst in the nation behind its evil twin, Nevada—should have come as a surprise but frankly did not. From the beginning of the recession, the Golden State has been stuck bringing up a humbled nation's rear and seems mired in that less-than-illustrious position.
What has happened to my adopted home state of over last decade is a tragedy, both for Californians and for America. For most of the past century, California has been "golden" not only in name but in every kind of superlative—a global leader in agriculture, energy, entertainment, technology, and most important of all, human aspiration.
Can't say I'm surprised. This is what happens when you give unbridled power to the left. And yes, Schwarzenegger was a leftist despite the (R) after his name.
Joel Kotkin writes a California-bashing article every month. He lives here, but apparently, he hates the state. It's hard for me to take him very seriously. In fact, if you look at his articles, they're basically the same thing every time. He just rearranges the paragraphs.

However much it's "crumbling", Cali still has a lo-o-o-ng way to fall before it reaches the level of all the red states it supports in federal dollars.... and even then, those states still always end up at the bottom of the heap in poverty, health and education!
Oh, and the most "crumbling" parts of California? The "red" parts naturally!

All you need to do is a little research into the out of control, job killing regulations passed by the democrats in that state.
They are turning once fertile crop land into a dust bowl, destroying jobs, destroying people in the process.
California is the perfect example of liberal governance run amok.

LOL... I think people forget how MANY "red counties" are here, and just lump the whole state together as a liberal bastion. Truth be told, nearly 50% of California is politically conservative, and yes - those truly are the areas that have the most problems. Look at the liberal coastal regions, like the Bay Area and Los Angeles, and you'll see we're still a looooooong way from "crumbling." Sure, things aren't quite like they used to be, but it's better than most of the country right now.
So when people ask why I don't move, considering the high COL, I can only laugh at the suggestion. Where exactly would I move, and do they currently have job openings in my field? And how much less would my salary be in other states? I'll tell you, since I have actually researched the idea... jobs are practically nonexistent in most other states (WA and MA usually being the exception, since they've always had excellent library systems/funding), and my salary would be considerably less. No thanks!
