Perry's an interesting character. He wants to be seen as a solid conservative, but his history is quite mixed:

* He favors in-state tuition for illegal immigrants.

* He mandated an HPV vaccination for pre-teen girls.

* He used to be a Democrat, and in 1988, he was Al Gore's campaign manager in Texas.

* He has said he's "fine" with same-sex marriage in states other than Texas.

He's clearly not the wet dream candidate that many conservatives were hoping for.
