Go get a couple boxes of Entenmann's cookies and have somebody from the office bring some Folgers coffee. Or is that too much of a hassle? Guess so.

Maybe the government would like to buy my $20/each condoms, seeing as they are so busy screwing everyone (okay, I stole that joke from the comments section of the article).

$16 muffins, $8.25 coffee served in audit of the Justice Department (http://news.yahoo.com/16-muffins-8-coffee-served-justice-audit-023623142.html - broken link)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - As the government grapples to find ways to trim the bloated federal deficit, a new report suggests officials might start with cutting out $16 muffins and $10 cookies.

"We found the Department (of Justice) spent $16 on each of the 250 muffins served at an August 2009 legal conference in Washington," said a DOJ Office of Inspector General report released on Tuesday.

The DOJ spent $121 million on conferences in fiscal 2008 and 2009, which exceeded its own spending limits and appeared to be extravagant and wasteful, according to the report that examined 10 conferences held during that period.

The review turned up the expensive muffins, which came from the Capital Hilton Hotel just blocks from the White House, as well as cookies and brownies that cost almost $10 each.

The department spent $32 per person on snacks of Cracker Jack, popcorn, and candy bars and coffee that cost $8.24 per cup at another conference, the report said.

$121 million on extravagant conferences and the government wants to cut education, health care, SS, etc. That's just great.

If those darn millionaires would pay their "fair share" we wouldn't have to worry about this! Eric Holder's people can't be eating $4 muffins and $2 coffee, that would be outrageous!

It's an outlandish amount, for sure, but to be fair it's just one event 2 years ago.

How much pork is being shelled out for the entertaining/schmoozing the White House does on a regular basis?
(and yes, I'm talking about all administrations being guilty of this, but right now we're in terrible financial straits so it's that much worse at this point)

What kind of similar benefits do the president, senators, representatives enjoy from day to day?

They get spend-happy in government because its not their money that they are spending.

When I worked in derivatives in the mid-90's, ordering out for dinner was often very lavish, relative to what we expense in academia or in smaller companies I've worked for. Of course, it's the company doing the expensing, not the taxpayers.

The problem isnt the 1 event. The problem is the mentality that it is acceptable to do this even for 1 event. The mentality that its just a drop in the bucket. Add the drops and your bucket is overflowing. I get what your saying and agree with you. But to be fair this is one of many events throughout the GOV. This is just the one that was singled out.

As Warren Buffet said: why should my secretary pay more for muffins than I do?

Of course, Mr. Buffet purchase his muffins in lots of 2 million, hence his price per muffin is only $2.23 each. His secretary has to pay a flat $3.50 per muffin, since she only purchases one at a time.

Oh sure, I do agree with this too.

Right, I just think it's not very fair to single it out without addressing the rest.
Then again, maybe this will set off more reports of the same, from whichever gov't department or branch.

Let's make them foot the bill for extravagantly expensive refreshments, then we'll see how much they complain about their $600k salaries.
