Why is a major US food manufacturer now having their packaged peaches done in China and Thailand? I was appalled when I looked on the label of children's packaged fruit and saw that it is coming from China and Thailand. First it was only Mandarin Orange slices now it is peaches and other fruits. We have plenty of peach growers here and they always supplied this company. Why did this company turn their backs on the growers that built their business?
Aside from the quality and safety concerns I am outraged that another sector of our economy is being outsourced when agriculture is one of our greatest assets.

Where's the outrage?
Have to reply to a post from a Granbian. I grew up in Tariffville. Picked tobacco for Coleman Bros. in the 1950s. Fished and swam in Salmon Brook, loved Craigs Mill before the 1955 flood broke the dam.
Has to do with prices. The retailers will always buy from the lowest priced supplier.
If I knew who this major manufacturer was I would be more ourtraged ? Really,as others have stated stores and, consumers are only interested in the price .Take a look at the produce section lots of food isn't grown in America anymore .There's food from latin america, thailand etc among many others .China is the worlds biggest (IMHO) so why not add peaches to the list ?As for argiculture ,America 's farmland is shrinking at an astronishing rate for development .In my neighboring state Ohio, there was an article about the rate at which farmland was disappearing it was very interesting read.
As a result there are a lot of things I will not buy.
Frozen fish, fruit in cans or jars, pet treats, pine nuts, the list goes on and on.
My line of business allows me to see what Chinese manufacturing produces.
Like I said, if it comes from China I don't buy it.
Me either. One has to very careful in the label reading department. It sometimes says package in US or something to tell you it was grown someplace else. We gets lots of produce from SA. So far, I'm fine with that.
Could've been a late frost that affected the growers peach trees when they were blooming. Resulting in less fruit available from growers here.
More than likely, cheaper to pack their fruit from China and Thailand and ship to here.

A little cheaper but grown with sewage water for irrigation, grown on farms that are not regulated to the same safety standards, and sucking in far more pollution in the air.
This is rediculous. We're saving a few pennies (maybe) and rapidly trading away our future. Food prices have risen quite a bit already. I'm not convinced that the processors didn't use that opportunity to substitute and justify cheaper products with the illusion that they're selling the same product.
