That's because the US sank it (and several other Iranian ships) during the Iraq-Iran War to prevent Iran from invading Iraq after the Iraqis got beaten and were in full retreat.
No, the U.S. didn't sink any Iranian destroyer. they sank a frigate and a bunch of gunboats.
It had nothing to do with preventing Iran from invading Iraq, the Iranian navy was inconsequential and certainly wasn't capable of moving troops to invade anything. The incident evolved from Iran mining the Persian Gulf.
Great. Another non-military analyst of the military.
The Soviets were primarily defensive. Their carriers were designed to defend their surface groups, not pound countries into submission.
That smells like puke from Pukipedia the penultimate disinformation source.
And now for some real perspective.
Thailand's, um, so-called "aircraft carrier" is the Chakri Nareubet. It has a whopping 10 aircraft, usually 4 helicopters (ASW) and 6 Harriers.
Italy has 2 carriers, the Vittorio Veneto with its gigantic threat of 6 helicopters and the Giuseppe Garibaldi with 12 aircraft, but only 8 Harriers (they're actually AV-8s but I still call them Harriers).
Spain's Asturias has 24 aircraft, but can only carrier 12 Harriers.
Brasil's Minas Gerias and Sau Paulo carry 12 and 32 aircraft each, but the fixed wing are A-4s. That's right. With a top speed of 665 knots or so, they ain't going to be blowing anybody's doors off.
I should point out that, um, "carrier" has 6 and 18 A-4s respectively.
Argentina's 25 de Mayo carries six A-4s and 10 helos.
France's 4 carriers include 2 helicopter carriers, the Mistral and the Jeanne d'Arc. The Clemenceau, Foch and de Gaulle can carry about 40 aircraft each, but the Clemenceau and Foch can only hand Entendards. The de Gaulle typically has about 30 Rafale.
None of the Soviet carriers had more than 30 aircraft. Something like the Varyag which the Chinese have now carried 18 Su-33Ds, but then Soviet carriers performed a different mission than US carriers did.
The British Hermes, Ark Royal and Invincible class carriers generally carried about 3 dozen aircraft, but mostly short range strike aircraft like Buccaneers, GR.7s and GR.9s (but the Ark Royal did have 12 F-4Ks at one time).
You guys are comparing apples and pick-up trucks, which might impress lurkers and the usual C-D crowd, but doesn't say much.

Well, they ain't too bright.
Indeed. I'm sure you'll find the money somewhere.
Had Skyhawks. They've been using A-4s for a while, and I think Brasil actually uses a multi-nation fighter now.
Not any more it isn't.
Harrier was a damn good aircraft! If not, why does the US Marine corps use it?

Because there is no, and hasn't been any other option available for a VSTOL fixed wing attack aircraft?
Harriers are neat but they have a short range, are slow, don't carry much ordinance, and have been plagued by safety and maintenance issues. The VSTOL version of the F-35 has also had all sorts of development problems, I think they were considering (or might have) canceled it.
