If he did I wonder how many of todays lefty Democrats can keep claiming him as their hero.

The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.

Thomas Jefferson wasn't alive in 1986. Was he?

Jefferson can be claimed by neither party. For every "conservative" quote, I can cite an equally "liberal" quote by Jefferson. He was the ultimate bipartisan, a political sphinx. I do admire Jefferson for his incredible intellect, curiosity and devotion to the ideas of liberal democracy. I'm no libertarian, but he was truly an incredible man.

He also warned against having a country controlled by industrial concerns, wanted an agricultural based country-not quite the right wing utopia-

There appears to be no good evidence that this is accurately attributed to Thomas Jefferson.

Given that it is the Republican Party which favors the economic interests of those who do not work over those who do (see, e.g., capital gains), it is surprising that you would find anything at all attractive about this quotation.

That was my point. This quote was pulled out of thin air by some crazies in 1986 (there is no evidence of it existing prior to that).

Please provide sufficient, robust and appropriate documentation to support your assertion that Thomas Jefferson didn't say that.
