Gansta Rap yes; I agree.......a lot of it is trash.

Side note here: the Motown sound of 40+ years tended to be very positive; 'happy' music. Maybe in part to it being based on the old Negro Spirituals

Since the original question was asked "does it have a negative influence" yes, is it responsible for crime- no. No more than an entire generation of people who grew up on blood and gore movies went out and attempted to imitate what they see on the screen.

Anyway, "hip hop" is to broad, and I assume the OP means specifically gangster rap. There's "bite the head of a bat" Ozzy Osbourne/Black Sabbath rock, and Foreigner "Juke Box Hero" rock.

More importantly I would agree on this, children have way to easy access to violent themes (music, movies, games, internet, etc.). As a parent you really have to 24/7 re-enforce morality, family values, and ethics.

Well said! I'd like to re-emphasize: "As a parent you really have to 24/7 re-enforce morality, family values, and ethics"

No argument from me here-------the first line of defense against messed up children is parents/guardians who 'walk the talk' in their own behavior.

Music simply doesn't have that kind of power. Remember that suburban white teenagers are the biggest consumers of this music, and if anything, they are better-behaved and more college-obsessed than ever before.
I've heard this and I wonder where this test was conducted. When I am out driving and hear/feel rap music blasting from vehicles, it isn't from a "suburban white teenagers" car.
Hip hop culture responsible? Can't say..but it's popular in ATL and look at the crime rate there.

A huge leap in order to make that connection. You've never seen white-suburban kids "booming" rap in their cars? Hmm, okay I'll give you that in ATL. The #1 target consumer of rap music today is the white-suburban teen.

How is that a huge leap?

Well you commented on hip-hop, and then mention crime in ATL as if there's a direct correlation. Could it also be that the ATL population has grown astronomically which also brings big city issues. It seemed you were attempting to connect dots that are to far apart.
