Soldiers are soldiers. They should all sleep and shower together like in the movie "Starship Troopers".
Starship Troopers? C'mon, that's dumb. A better model would come from the X-Men Brotherhood. But let's not forget the Hell's Angels. Anyway, I think when it comes to the real military, the straight men ought to have one sleeping quarters, straight women another, and then we can mix all the gay people together regardless of their gender. I'm not sure how well that final configuration would work, so we might have to install cameras.

I will give you that the United States is much better than Europe in a few regards. Obesity, Crime rate, teen pregnancy, worst healthcare system, empire mentality, paradise for the ultra rich, and reckless spending. But Quality of living for the bulk of the population, especially minorities? Not so much.
Yes, i already beat you to it, gays and lesbians are so disinterested in sex, that their libidos are almost non existent. Just watch the next gay pride parade, sexual references are completely absent, the gay pride parades are purely of a cerebral celebration for the accomplishments, and advances in technology and literature of gays, and not about voyeurism, or a parade of leather thongs and half-naked people.

And how do you determine who is straight and who is gay?
The overwhelming majority of gays walk around society (and in the military) and you'd never know it. Most gays are not flamboyant fairies dancing in rainbow colored clothing to Judy Garland or Liza Minelli.
And until heterosexuals are held to the same standard of not showing it, which we sure as heck know isn't going to happen in the military where obscene sex talk is the norm, it's a double standard to force gays to.
It's not about whether or not you are a flaming gay, or a person who wants his/her personal life to be just that, personal. It's about human nature, and human sexuality.
If it is considered unwise to let men and women share the same living and shower areas, it's also unwise, for the same reasons, to let gays, lesbians and bi-sexual people to do the same.
We aren't keeping the living quarters and showers for men and women separate, because of misogynistic tendencies of men, gender bigotry, or the ick factor women experience if they think a fellow soldier ogled them. We keep them separate because we do not want sexual relations and romances among the ranks of our soldiers within their units.
Bingo. When I was in Iraq and Afghanistan, we would share quarters and showers with coalition members; many which didn't have any policies on homosexuality. In the mornings you'ld see a "12 person" shower trailer packed with up to 30 soldiers. Nobody gave a damned what your orientation was. Just get in, get clean up, and get out in five minutes or less. There's no time for f'ing around (literally).
Overall, homophobia has been an effective method for social conservatives to scare up the vote. Over the years, however, it's lost its effectiveness. With DADT dead, their only remaining boogieman is gay marriage. They can probably get one or two more election cycles out of that before that dies to. Then they'll find another "threat" or stick to their current lineup:
- Hispanics (ILLEGALS!!!)
- Muslims (TERRORISTS!!!)
- Poor Blacks (CRIMINALS!!!)
- Poor Whites (DEADBEATS!!!)
