Fred Phelps ran for Governor of Kansas, gaining 15% of the Democratic Party vote; Phelps Jr. ran for Attorney General with 25% of Democrats supporting him.

They were also invited to several White House functions by none other than Al Gore, who was once a buddy of Phelps. He has worked hard to bury that connection.
