What about burger flippers? Many of them work and are poor.

As a person that holds certain conservative beliefs and preferences, I feel sad for the poor. I recognize the effect that the environment brings to the poor.

...However that can be fixed by offering a superior education. With a different school curriculum we could lift up the poor to the middle class....

...But meh, that's just me being optimistic.

However did you afford a house on about 25 a year? How much down payment did you have?

If you are fortunate enough to live in certain places, you can buy a cheap ol' house.

The unemployed college grads can be found on Wall Street not wanting to work.

that's usually only available to poor people who do not share housing with other poor people. (Where's the logic in that?)

those who share housing with other poor people often find that none of them are eligible for assistance paying utilities.

A single person or married couple is not poor at $25K unless they have lots of kids.

I'm a contrarian, so I take the opposite approach. I know that earning money is hard for me (and as a childless adult, handouts are practically nonexistent), so I hoard money when I get some.

As we showed in my Facts about Welfare thread, 90% of people on food stamps are actually the working poor meaning they do indeed have a job, often 2-3 jobs, but they're just not making much even working all the light hours of the day.
