Also, let me say I'm not a fan of Obama. He's far from the most liberal president we've ever had and he's doing a terrible job. Don't lump me in with his supporters, please.

There are lots of other things involved in the 1st amendment. The Supreme Court ruled in '58 that affiliation with a group (from the Boy Scouts to the Communist Party) is protected.

But how American is it to persecute anyone based on anything, though?

Are you a patriot if you arrest people based on their political beliefs?

Hell, your right to be in the KLAN is protected by the US constitution.

Except that some of those communist were working for the Soviet Union.

Try doing a search of "List of Americans in the Venona papers" and see how many soviet communist were working here in USA.

Nobody is asking to prosecute communists we just want them to stay away from our local and federal governments.
