In Ron Paul's America, you can have whatever animal you wish because the government shouldn't tell any American that they can't have 50 exotic wild animals in their backyard...that would just be downright unAmerican.
'Ron paul's America'?
This happened in obama's America in case you didn't notice.
Yup! Thousands and thousands of posts right here in CD by righties who SAY they don't want bigger government and SAY regulations are BAD...(unless it's a law or regulation THEY want)
Anyone ever heard of my Uncle Mike? Hmm probably not by that name.. Check out - Dr. Michael Bleyman. As a child I went many times to his carnivore research facility in Siler City. He had a pet jaguar named Gregor Mendel.
Unfortunately he has passed on, but his work carries on.
The tragic shooting of the poor animals that escaped from this so called zoo (prison) in Zanesville, Ohio, is another example why exotic or any wild animals should not be kept as pets or forced to live in captivity. This shooting also underscores the trigger happy stance of too many police officers in this country today, but this time it was toward poor, helpless animals. Tranquilizers should have been used and if not effective, shoot to disable rather than kill. It was the animals' their fault they were forced to live in cages but only wanted their freedom when the doors were opened. And because they were forced to live this way by one selfish and irresponsible individual they had to sacrifice their lives for his vanity.
I bet these officers enjoyed every moment of it, acting as if they were on a big time hunting safari somewhere in Africa, how sadistic and perverted!
Worse still the sheriff knew of these deplorable conditions and did nothing about it. Charges should be filed against this cold hearted individual for failure to take action that could have prevented this tragedy from happening in the first place. He is as much to blame as the owner.
If such sad instances are to be avoided in the future it is imperative that tough laws be passed throughout the entire nation forbidding any one from keeping or raising a wild or exotic animal except those operating animal sanctuaries or refuges dedicated toward providing homes for these animals when rescued from such irresponsible owners.
Fortunately there is legislation now before Congress that can correct this situation. S. 324, Captive Primate Safety Act is now being considered in the U. S. Senate and I urge all who oppose keeping exotic and wild animals in captivity to contact their two U. S. senators.
People that get these animals might think they are nice to keep as pets or exhibits but if they say they love the animals they keep they need to know what their term of love means. If you love someone or even an animal, you don't force it to be confined to a home or pen against its will. Just put your self in the animal's position. Would you want to spend your life living in a cage or pen? Of course not!
It is poor selfishness and vanity on the part of those who wish to keep these animals. Don't be tempted to buy or get them even when they appear cuddly and cute as babies. Remember they will not remain that way but become adult, large, moody, angry and even dangerous.
If you deplore what happened in Zanesville, please, please, please push for tough laws even in your locality, county or state to outlaw the keeping or raising exotic animals. These animals belong in the wild to live the life they were intended to live as they desire. You are not doing them a favor by yanking them out of their natural environment and forcing them to live lives contrary to their will. If you truly love them you will respect their wishes as to where they would like to be.
So many lies and incorrect statements.
The guy had permits, I guess you want the Sheriff to violate the guys rights despite him being within the legal boundaries as set by state law?
Ah, they are "large, moody, angry and even dangerous" but we should easily be able to tranquilize them anyway.
P.S. SHOOT TO DISABLE? WHAT THE HECK? You have zero clue about the impact of "shooting to disable" something like a tiger, lion, bear etc. Oh, maybe they should have just hand-tasered that bengal tiger. Seriously, you are clueless, I doubt you've ever fired a gun in your life but you know how to deal with situations like this.

Yet, when drivers make stupid mistake the police are able to go as far as revoking his license
But it's okay to let a troubled individual have 10 Bengal Tigers coz it violates his rights.
The sad part of this story is in deed the out come for these animals that had no control of their lives. A fruit cake wanted dangerous animals applied for permits and got them. He lost it and turned the animals loose on society. The animals controlled by instinct met an unhappy and undignified ending.
The villain in the story is not the police. The bad guy is the owner.
Shoot to disable? Wow, wound a lion or a tiger and they will definetly become very dangerous and in a hurry. Wound a grizzly bear and now you have a big problem.
The cop explained why they didnt use tranquilizer guns. They dont have any and they are not trained to use them. There was no time to play games.
Apex predatores were on the loose. These LEO's deserve to be commended. To serve and protect is what they did and they were at risk doing it.

Yep. Some states have very lax laws on the subject but I suspect it is because it is so rare that it just hasn't hit thier radar.
If you think this is bad, you should know what I know about venemous snake keeping. There have been people busted in apartment buidlings with 20+ venemous snakes including mambas!
This was more of an issue in a warm state like Florida. As a result, FL has STRINGENT regulations to keep venemous snakes.
P.S. I'm still thinking about the Lewis and Clark journals from the 1800's where they shot a grizzly 5-6 times and it still kept coming and so forth.....and the OP's comment about shooting the animals to disable instead of kill them.
