But you and I both know the Canadians and the Mexicans are way too smart for that anyway. If we actually went the route of real free trade and competing currencies, they'd both be building walls to keep us out and particularly Mexico because then the gap between the value of money as a commodity and it's value as an exchange medium would disappear.
Tax the hell out of them. they want to use our country as a pass-thru, then tax the hell out of them. make so hard to get thru, they'll tear up their own treaty. They don't have our approval to come through, unless Bush or Obama approved it.
Secondly, make the border patrol checks so strict, they would rather carry the loads on their backs than to bring their potential truck bombs through one of our cities.

Canada's trucks met the safety and emissions standards from the get-go. There was no payment made to Canadian firms to reimburse them for making their trucks compliant because they already were at the same rate as your trucks.

Canadians on average earn slightly more than Americans and enjoy a slightly higher standard of living so are unlikely to be flooding our borders looking for work. Since our cost of goods is slightly less than yours, it kind of puts us on equal footing. The disparities between Mexican vs. US costs of goods and labor is considerably more considerable.
Your entire population is slightly less than the state I live in. Mexico has more people living in dire poverty than Canada has Canadians, Basically you're comparing apples to hammers.
