At least around here, there are literally NO public ashtrays in their attempt to "discourage smoking." All that accomplishes is adding to litter, since you can't drop a freshly-stomped cigarette into a trash can (fire hazard). I personally take measures to avoid either, since I hate to litter... so I just keep the old cig in my pack until it's safe to throw away.
I work in a County Library, which shares a parking lot with the Sheriff's Department, County Courthouse, and a few other official buildings. Most of the cops & DAs are smokers (both cigarettes and cigars), so I often join them for breaks in the courtyard next to our buildings... and when public works realized a collection of butts was gathering there, they finally gave us our very own ashtray. Problem solved, as the litter has now disappeared!
Nobody's perfect, and you have the right to feel however you want... I just get tired of the "high and mighty" attitude some people have towards smokers, when they have bad habits & pollution-creating activities themselves. We're all hypocrites about some things, but this particular hypocrisy seems to be all the rage these days.
A lot child molesters don't seem to smoke. Scares the kiddies I guess. Just sayin.
What is irritating to me in some work environments is the that smokers seem to think that they should have a cigarette break for 10-15 minutes an hour, every hour while their coworkers are picking up their slack.
Don't you mean while their co-workers are posting on Facebook.....or CD?
Since roughly 80% of the adult population does not smoke, smokers are a decided minority. I always tell non-smokers there will come a day when something you do the vast majority of people don't do or like including me and you'll need me to stand up in defense of you.

When I would get stumped on a technical issue, my non-smoking manager would TELL me to go have a cigarette. Because he knew I would stand there thinking, and thinking, and thinking, and thinking about it.
Why did he do that?
Because 99% of the time I came off the elevator with a solution.
But yeah, who are they kiddin? lol. Everybody takes breaks. Probably more than they should.
....which by the way, smokers never used to do until workplace smoking was BANNED. Can you imagine how much more work would get done if companies could have "smoking buildings" on their campuses? Each cubicle would look like a chimney, and nobody would ever go out!

LOL... and touche.
We can't access Facebook or other "social networking" sites from work computers, since they're on a filtered county line... but you can access other non-professional sites, and some of my co-workers take advantage of that regularly. I occasionally check my Yahoo email, but rarely spend more than 5-10 minutes daily on anything non-work-related. And if anyone tries to prove me wrong, keep in mind that I don't work traditional hours/days - and have an iPhone that I use on breaks.

Sad, but true. When the craving really kicks in, I do have trouble concentrating on anything else... that's when I excuse myself for 5 minutes, unless I'm unable to leave the current task. Luckily I have a longer "tolerance" than some smokers, so it can be 2-3+ hours before I feel the NEED. Wonder how chain-smokers get anything done?

Totally... that (the amount of smoke) would probably bother even me, but at least we wouldn't have to stop working except to eat & pee. Why do you think most casinos won't allow smoking bans? Imagine the money they'd lose, if smokers got up from their machines/tables every hour or two! If non-smokers personally lost money whenever we took breaks, I bet they'd suddenly change their tunes.
If we are discussing people invading other peoples airspace, what do I do when I am subjected to a woman or man who is wearing cologne that is extremely overpowering or smells down right nasty and cheap??? It actually makes me gag and my stomach flips.
Walking past a smoker is no more dangerous than walking past somebody wearing perfume... both acts could cause an allergy or asthma attack, but neither will cause death.
I always walk off into "left-field" when having a smoke. I don't even stand next to other smokers.
I don't toss butts on the ground. I field-strip, and toss the butt safely in the trash.
What sets me off though, is when I'm standing off by myself, minding my own business, and some arse decides to walk up and lecture me.
"That's gonna kill you one day."
Which I respond to with.......
"I was going to say the same thing to you."
