What great news to hear the Bush/Cheney War (don't know how they nuckleheads sleep nights) will finally be put to an end and troops will come home. This announce right before the holidays must be such a wonderful gift to those soldiers and their families. I am so happy for all of them. Special thanks to all the military who risk their lives everyday for us. You guys are appreciated and remembered!!!

I agree. Lets not send them away again under some false pretext next time. This is great news. I guess Obama is keeping his promise. I would have liked to have seen it sooner, but this is good.

Through the summer, American officials continued to assume that the agreement would be amended, and Mr. Obama was willing to support a continued military presence. In June, diplomats and Iraqi officials said that Mr. Obama had told Mr. Maliki that he was prepared to leave up to 10,000 soldiers to continue training and equipping the Iraqi security forces. Mr. Maliki agreed, but said he needed time to line up political allies.

Just some needed perspective to counter the false idea that this wasn't an outcome of failed negotiations.

I don't think that holds true any more, the Military Industrial Complex's stranglehold on Washington has never been this strong in the past.
Just look at the fact that the military budget is huge compared to the Cold War days when there was at least a concieved threat by another major power which is something that does not exist today, there is only a handful of goat herders in a far away land that we feel threatened by.
You do not hear much about REAL cuts to the defense budget, any cuts that have been mentioned are imaginary cuts.
