In some areas, they're charging a fee for the ID--thats a poll tax. Lots of urban people and students don't have a car, let alone a DL. It really impacts the ethnic elderly & poor, and students--the very group that the R's would benefit from keeping out of the polls. I'm a moderate R, and I'm ashamed of my party for this. We should be able to win by the strength of our ideas, and not by dirty tricks. This is wrong. This is being challenged in the courts, and I'm betting it's shot down--it should be.

Exactly. Its not that I have a problem with proving that its only legal American citizens doing the voting...its that as you said, unless EVERY legally approved American citizen has access to getting that ID, then it is voter surpression. If they have a voter surpression (like Texas) in any state, they should be required to also have mobile vans going all over the state registering seniors/students, etnics, elerly, poor and every other group that cannot get to a DMV especially in these rural areas.

How else can the unpolular Neocon/Tea Party/GOP win an election?

This is a good example of why I'm no longer a Republican.

The GOP has morphed into an angry, irrational, small-minded regional party that opposes US citizens in favor of corporatism. I'm now a staunch opponent of their agenda.

Ummmm...what's wrong with people showing photo ID to vote? Seems like it should be that way. How is this infringing on anyone's right to vote? It isn't like anyone who is actually eligible to vote wouldn't have the necessary documentation, right? The only point I don't care for is the ex-convicts that served their time.

My husband and I always voted straight party until 08. We're going to vote for the most reasonable R candidates in the primary. If they don't win, and my R option is an extremist, then we'll vote mixed ballot in the general. We'll still vote R on local races, but we know most of those people and they tend to not be from the far right end of the party to begin with.

the gop doesnt want to spend money, yet will spend millions trying to enforce voter id. its a numbers game essentially. the GOP knows who will and wont have the ID's, so they tweak the law to there benefit. a black lady in tennessee was denied the right to vote a few weeks back. she was 96, and said she had more trouble voting now then she did back in jim crow. you can show them everything and they will still reject you if they dont want you to vote.

I am eligible to vote (for now at least) and don't have the necessary documentation. Make it free and I'm on it right away.

No driver's license? Or will that not work for Photo ID and/or Proof of citizenship? I'm not being sarcastic I'm not 100% sure exactly what qualifies as proper documentation in their plans but it doesn't sound like it's too bad. I do think a government issued ID should be free if they mandate that you have to have one to vote, however.
