Not if the people are receiving benefits and pay in return.

Their benefits and pay forcibly taken from my earnings.

Maybe they should set up a job board where taxpayers can "hire a deadbeat" for the day since we are already paying for them?

Yes.

Hand them a broom and dustpan and have them clean up trash, dog crap, and cigarette butts.

Beats sitting in front of the boob tube all day long.
We have a vast untapped labor pool in this country called the penal system. Get those criminals off their butts doing as you say, clean up the streets, fix potholes, mow lawns, whatever. All free of charge and put the money that is spent elsewhere. Oops unions would not be able to collect dues. Hmmmm

Well, not really free of charge. You do have to pay them. You have to vet their skills. And the security required to bring them into densley populated areas could be formidable.

Plus, I doubt their productivity would be anything close to boastful.

Can say I want a convict mowing my lawn.

Depends on the individual, don't you think.
I had welfare to work employees who were slow to learn but with patience and training, they produced fine product.
I've had "regular" people who couldn't be bothered to learn how to do the job and I've fired them.

It depends on the individual and their limitations.
Not everyone is smart or grasps what many of us consider simple concepts. They're to be helped, not vilified.

You know those babies that everyone thinks are valuable and precious, at what age do they become less valuable?

BTW, if your friend hates it so much, perhaps s/he should seek a different type of work.

It's a good program and has worked out well here but the funding ran out.
My wife works in a office of 1000 people and they hired quite a few of these folks and they worked out well.

Yes, Welfare to Work should be funded. I don't care if they do nothing but dig a hole today and fill it in tomarrow, they should WORK not just sit on their duffs and collect welfare. Maybe that would put a little fire in their butts to take a chance at job training seriously.

Couple guys on horseback with loaded shotguns did the trick back in the day. Should now too.

It had absolutely nothing to do with poor parenting and lazyness on the part of the students.)
Then maybe instead of making up reasons that fit your personal biases perhaps you should listen to your friend who at least has expertise in the area of education.
