You should read through the interview. It interesting that he says he never, to that day of the interview, spoke w/ Perot about politics.
I still believe that Perot was in the race specifically to help Clinton. Just reading Stockdale's interview and the disorganization just confirms to me that Perot was not in to win. He became very popular, stepped down, got back in, and divided the right vote enough for Clinton to win with 43% in 1992 and got enough of the vote in 1996 to enable Clinton to win a second term. Then he never ran again - just for both of the Clinton elections.
The man started out great with the "Who am I" remark which was very funny.
He then crashed and burned.
It was a shame as I recall him being a vet and an academic. Struck me as a decent fella who had no business in politics.
He made the "Who am I? Why am I here?" remark which started off well-intentioned, but then didn't really follow that up with anything. Also I remember he couldn't hear a certain question because his hearing aid wasn't turned up--and additionally I think there was a moment where he wandered over to Gore's podium by accident. He didn't have much else to say except for saying "government gridlock" over and over.
Apparently he wasn't prepared as Perot forgot to inform him he'd be at the debate. He was a war hero and a smart guy, but unfortunately the result of his appearance was that he became fodder for the press and late night comedy shows as being senile. The running joke at the time was that it appeared that he just randomly wandered into the event. I remember being 13 years old at the time and watching the famous SNL skit where Perot was driving Stockdale into the woods and sarcastically congragtulating him on his debate showing before pulling over to adandon him in the middle of nowhere.
I still can't believe Ross picked this buffoon to be his running mate a few moons ago.
He's not a buffoon--he's a war hero and a very smart man. He's just wasn't much of a politician. That's usually a good thing, but unfortunately it doesn't help you much in a debate.

LOL--I didn't read your post before mine--we described him with exactly the same words
Two guys, Choate in most states but a guy named Campbell in a dozen or so.
