The only countries that have ever threatened us or attempted an invasion are Germany, Japan and the U.S. of A. so put a sock in it.
I love it when you guys dredge up the War of 1812 to make a point.

We have a strong military to ensure our dollar which was pegged to oil is used to be the only currency traded in said oil. There is also the deterrent to attack us with the most powerful navy on earth. That kind stops folks from thinking about it. Of course in the world of the "why can't we all get along" folks think if we put our guns down everybody else would too. If we talk to dictators they will be nice. Churchill had it right and it still applies today.

Dude, Churchill lived in a time when the rule of the game was to militarily invade countries soil. No one has done that since Vietnam except the U.S. of course, invading other countries. WE'RE the ones invading others, no one else has bothered to. This isn't the Cold War anymore, we're in 2011 going into 2012

So we should disband our military and just trust that everybody else will play nice and keep trading oil in dollars. We pegged the dollar to oil in the seventies so that is where we are. I may not like it but realize that is the reality we are in.

Oil would be traded in dollars if we didn't destroy the value of it via the Fed. Countries want a strong, stable currency. Not one that bobbles up and down in the water.

Well it is relevant in that it actually did occurr; contrary to accusing someone of "hiding" from a hypothetical war that hasn't.

You neglected the other two billigerants; Germany and Japan which were 70 years ago. Your point?

This has nothing to do with someone invading us but be able to patrol our arctic waters on our own without needing US help to deal with Russian subs and the Subs we would be looking at would be fast attack subs not Ohio class.

second of all Canada and the US would just add a Naval Maritime Patrol branch to NORAD since these will only be used in a defensive role or as an escort for our Frigates and destroyers that get deployed on NATO and U.N. missions like right now we are just off the Libyan Coast.

Canada is not able to project force but we are lacking in our own self sufficent defensive role where we did not keep up with patroling the arctic and Russia has taken advantage of our mistake and we are trying to fix that.

No one is saying you should disband your military.

Just stop using it as club to beat other people about the head.

We (Canada) have never created a problem for your country that has required you to maintain a huge military. Can you say the opposite?

Many of us here in Canada are of the opinion our military needs upscaling only due to your countries foreign policies pissing the whole world off.

We have not committed any egregious incursions onto your territory but nevertheless are the first you castigate when it comes to the size of our military. Why don't you spend any of that meaningless invective on your other neighbour who it could be arguably stated has and continues to cause you all sorts of grief but gets a free pass.

Our current objective of increasing our military expenditures is in a direct relationship to our northern exposure and territorial stewardship.

And guess what? That's probably going to be necessary to protect ourselves from your aggression up there as well as any from other foreign entities.

You folks have the unpleasant habit of seeing something you want and going after it regardless of sovereignity issues. I don't think we can expect any preferential treatment on that score. Am I wrong?

Actually under the SPP aka North American Union Canada has agreed to send ITS troops into the US to maintain order if needed and we of course will do the same for you Canucks. Also there is growing tension in the Arctic and Canada better get some muscle to deal with the Soviet Bear before the NWO'ites totally defang us Yanks.
