The OP and the liberals are so incredibly short-sighted, it is hilarious. Conservative government worked in America when it was starting out. Not so now. But if a country starts out with a limited government, which is what our fore-fathers envisioned due to the tyranny of England and the King, politicians will make sure to ruin it.
Politicians get elected by promising people things. This eventually means making promises to provide services and $$$ to people. Most people are foolish enough to believe in such things. It is the old "free ice cream" trick. Politicians also promise things to people in order to keep themselves in power and to hold people in serfdom to the state. Combine that with Corporate corruption and you make government more powerful and less for the people.
Socialism has failed in this country due to corruption. Look at the rampant waste in Medicare and the raiding of SS by the politicians. It is a failure as it bails out corporations in order to share in their losses and then vilifies them for making profits. It fails as it protects certain groups and seeks to make class warfare and racism where none exists and it cheapens it where it does exist.
Inevitably, human nature takes over. Too many people crave power and seek to make others subservient. That is a bad thing. The bottom line is that time erodes conservative government simply because others see people earning what they work for and they want the same without working for it. Social government provides that means and takes out the legs of the only true form of government that works. So many are duped by the politicians and by themselves and the people who see through the social utopian pipe dream pay for it.

So.....this is a very good stream of thought on the basic political issues we have always had regardless of whom was in power......but you didn't answer the question. Where is that successful libertertarian/conservative country....?
They can't, because that would mean that all of these SimCity champions would be forced to actually get off their duffs, do some research, and produce actual data that would substantiate their specious arguments.
I'm so impressed by such a good OP It seems to be the absolutely best posting question I've seen on this board, ever! Of course that means I'm going to have to use it myself when I talk politics with all my conservative neighbors at our get togethers.
Having read through this entire thread, I find it very interesting that no correct answer has been given except for a few Oil Empires in the Middle East. I find this discussion very interesting and this is what I originally came to PO&C looking for.
Moving on, has anyone every considered if the "Founding Fathers" thought that we would expand a nation of thirteen states into a nation of 50 states and what not?
Someone did point out a good fact here earlier eventhough it was misguided: Human nature's need for power and corruption. I mean isn't this the reason why the ideal of government was created in the first place. You know, to stop us from killing each other? I mean that is why we created laws. Every civilization had some sort of government and laws to prevent mankind's inherent nature to destroy itself. Hell, think about it, why do we have all these laws and regulations? Its because people keep on trying to find ways around existing ones due to greed. Once one loophole is exposed, "Government" tries to fix it and then everybody b*tches about. Don't you think if people acted the right way before, there wouldn't be a need? I'm not saying the government is the end all be all, because of course it isn't. But I'm saying there has to be a happy medium somewhere and we can find it, or at least I am optimistic that we can find it.
I think that the world has changed since the late 1700s. I mean, for example, public education and public roads are totally socialist. But if we got rid of them because of the principle of limited government, the U.S. would fall so far behind the world it isn't funny. So I think operating in today's society requires some pooling of income to a "central" power of some size (be it federal, state, or local) so the common good is served. If not, we'll form them somehow anyway (i.e. tribes, feudal systems, etc.) but their resources will be limited.
There's some sort of balance that must be achieved. Finding that balance is where conflicts arise.

Republicans, conservatives, tea partiers, and libertarians love to talk about the government doing less and shrinking government. I'm just curious if those who think government should be smaller, or shouldn't do much, could point to a country where their political philosophy is currently put in place and is showing good results.
it hasn't been tried anywhere in the modern world. by your standards freedom would never work. people like you are incapable of accepting the inherent risk in life.
if someone dies or is injured at work, following a recreational pursuit, taking medication, imbibing alcohol, driving a car, your natural inclination is to ban or regulate that activity. whilst the benefits of your risk averse policies might be there for everyone to see, very little progress has been made in any area of life without risk. the first people to fly, build skyscrapers, inject insulin or penicillin, the first heart transplant or brain operation etc. i could probably go on all day about things which improved the quality of your life but came an the expense of many other peoples lives.
i just wish that you understood the incredible harm you do when you try to regulate life
