The 2011-2012 Detroit Public School year started on Sept. 6, with thousands of homes and streets all over the city adorned with signs that had the two-word slogan "I'm In" everywhere. Nearly two months into the school year, the one thing that is not in a lot of Detroit Schools right now are books.
"I know there is a shortage and there is an order and they are still sharing books," said Andrew Hayes, whose son is a third-grader at Fisher Magnet Elementary on the city's east side. "There are a lot of frustrated parents. They want the kids to have what they are supposed to have. At the beginning of the year, we were told that every student would have the textbooks. It's seven weeks into school."
Teachers at Cass Technical High School -- the city's largest high school -- say that they are short nearly 2,400 textbooks in all grade levels. According to the Detroit Federation of Teachers, the deficiencies range across all subjects including English, chemistry, geometry, Spanish, and U.S. history.
The last 3 schools I've tutored in (math) didn't even use the books. 3 schools and the books are sitting on the shelves. The kids all get handouts.
Why ? Well you have a 1200 page 6th grade math book that isn't even in the order of the curriculum taught and about 700 pages more than is needed. The teachers find the handouts more effective.
Pretty much surprised me as you read about all these textbook wars with the political parties.
The books in some places get there and then they are ripped and marked up into garbage so they become unusable.
There is no respect for learning, teachers, the property of others or themselves IMO and that makes it tough to maintain any supply of books in a sea of inhumanity.
Why in the hell would you turn something as saddening as this that affects all students regardless of race into a racial issue?
That's just it it doesn't affect all races at least not to the same degree.
Lets see Detroit is 83% Black, run by Blacks and the school system is overwhelmingly Black. It is the largest, blackest city in the country and can't even deliver basic materials to its students. It deserves to be called out.
