For gay rights, for free markets, for increased domestic defense spending, for gun rights, against the war in Iraq, believe we need a mass pullout of Afg. with two or three small bases for training and transitionary purposes, against starting new wars unless it's retaliation for killing innocent Americans, for tax cuts, for true education funding, for building infrastructure, pro-choice for rape and incest victims, hard on illegal immigration, for free speech regardless of issue, for right of privacy, still think we need healthcare reform . . .
I could go on and on but I'm definitely middle of the road. I am, however, a registered republican so I can vote in the primaries.

This is the problem with today's America. I disagree with you on some issues, but I bet you and I would vote alike about 80 percent of the time. However, I'm a registered Democrat. I just can't abide the extremist Republican elements, so I don't identify with that party. (I am well aware of the extremists on the Democrat side who are repulsive to me as well, but I just dislike the neo-cons and enrich the richest and plunder the rest types more.)
On most topics or issues, we'd be played against each other by the major parties and media outlets and think it was impossible for us to work together. Doubtful. I'm sure we could easily come to a compromise on most, if not all, things that is extremely workable for both of us.
These days, if you endorse any government action aimed at helping people, you are immediately a liberal lunatic or, even better, a raging socialist, a marxist, or a communist (with all terms being used interchangeably). Exorbitant spending of public funds on road construction, the erection of a border barrier, and the military apparently are the exception, of course.
At least, that's what posts on CD would have you believe.
I have a feeling, most people are somewhere in the middle: Liberal on some issues, conservative on others.

You forgot corporate welfare (the lion's share of the plundering of public funds), seems "ok" too. Conservative types say they dislike it, but it doesn't really stick in their craw nearly as hard as when they hear about a teacher getting a 22,000 a year retirement from their pension after 30 years of service.
Ideologies are an artificial construct designed to commodify public sentiment in order to diminish the political power of both individuals and society at large.
Sorry to be so literal, but I have to say that I don't choose to be any of those labels. I do find myself fitting one, and it is "very conservative" and of course with no apologies or reservations about it.
I just look within myself, like I would think we all do, and follow the principles that feel right. I never had to stop and decide what to believe. Belief in certain things just resonated, and others felt revolting, and some things even I can be "middle of the road about" if they are the type of things that would start a bloody, civil war to actually change, at this late date in our sick, degenerate world and nation.
I stopped partying back in the very early, eighties, stopped anesthetizing my conscience, and started sitting quietly, letting truth dawn on me, and yes, I mean the truth about my own, rotten ways, habits, beliefs, etc. etc.
I didn't run to any altar, sign up for any group, or do anything that I can mark on my calendar as "changing." Yet, I look back and I did a 180, from the promiscuous, hell-raising Texan I was in my youth. Here I am, a strong conservative, and was a homeschooling mom, etc.
why do YOU think of yourself as a liberal or conservative? what beliefs do you hold with the party of your choice?
I don't hold to any party, but I seem to find more in common with the conservatives from both the democrat and republican parties. As of late, it seems the conservative democrats are fewer in number then they were in the past.
Liberal on some issues, conservative on some issues, and moderate on some issues. Apolitical on other issues. I don't know what to pick, I"m all over the place.

...but looking for politicians with an honest and a genuine concern for the welfare of the people? Which is why it's tough to belong to any party, because there are too many politicians who are dishonest sellouts, and partisan, political hacks, who would rather see harm come to the nation if it meant defeating their political opponents.
