see, this is the problem with the 24 hr news media and the division our so called leaders have enabled.
The complication of the question you raise goes well beyond a simple dichotomy of one choosing to be on the left or right. There are many shades of grey that have been wiped out by our establishment.
I consider myself to be liberal AND conservative. Unfortunately, I can't be either without being forced into a box by the extremely judgmental members of either side. There is no middle of the road, not any more.
guess so. but i don't remember any president (or any majority in congress) in the history of the united states that wasn't put into a widely known group. (Republicans, Democrats, Whigs, etc.)

I'm in the same boat. Many of my views are "liberal" in that I support good wages for working people. I also support government policies that establish a social safety net -- e.g. unemployment insurance, food stamps, low cost health care, low cost college tuition, strong public schools. I also would like to see wealth taxed, not necessarily labor or wages. For many these days, that makes me a rabid communist.
I'm also fairly liberal on social issues. I am against all discrimination against gays, and I support women's reproductive rights. I know for the Christain Right, that makes me a satanist. Again...
I'm an average American, and I identify heavily with other average middle Americans. I'm patriotic. I'm pro-gun. I'm pro-family in that I'd like to see more children growing up in stable two-parent households. I'm also pretty much pro-religion, in that I support others rights to practice whatever faith they choose. I think crosses in public places and Merry Christmases around the holiday times are just fine. So long as no one pushes their particular brand of religion on me, I have no qualms with religious people.
I think my views would be extremely mainstream if this were the 1950s, the era the rabid righties idealize so much. However, in this era, I might as well be a Soviet.
