"The IRS is the latest agency to offer buyouts and early retirements to its employees... More than 90 percent of the IRS budget is related to employee expenses, Shulman [IRS Commissioner] said...Last month, the House Appropriations Committee approved a bill that would provide $11.5 billion for the agency in fiscal year 2012. That is $600 million less than it received last year and $1.8 billion less than President Obama's request. The Senate Appropriations Committee approve IRS funding at $11.7 billion."

Shouldn't this help the approval rating of Congress?

Good, providing the result is not simply too generous buyouts and retirement benefits paid by taxes.

This strategy is what most large companies have been doing for decades through process simplification and technology use. The tax system and resulting bureaucracy are opportunities for productivity improvements and resulting cost reduction. Budget reductions should encourage this.

Me thinks you have no idea what federal retirement plans consist of.

What else would it be related to? Trucks for shipping? Warehouse space for goods? It's a service organization. If their expenses were elsewhere I'd be concerned.

That being said, I think we should move to a flat tax system and wipe the organization completely, but that's just me.

Aside from that, the single due date for taxes is stupid. We should correlate it to drivers license renewal, and for those without driver's licenses there should be a blanket due date. That way they can spread out the work load in their organizations, and tax preparers would see a steady stream of revenue. It's better for everyone.

What about the part of Obamacare where the IRS enforces the fines for not having insurance ?
That bill had the IRS hiring more people.

Is that now dead in the water ?

If you had a flat tax you'd still need the IRS. Somebody has to collect the tax, process the forms, answer questions, pursue the non filers, write the instructions and that's just for a flat income tax. The IRS has an assortment of taxes and not all related to individuals.

We could wipe the organization as we know it. Same thing.

Yes, the "assortment of taxes" need to be wiped out too, and absorbed into income tax rates. Enough is enough.

Well reality is that there is no talk of revamping the tax structure yet they will be downsizing.

What that means is that more scammers will get through the system without getting caught.
