Kudos to the people of Shreveport Louisiana!

Quote:
Confederate flag critics say it is a symbol of hate and racism, and a grim reminder of the
tremendous suffering endured by African-Americans in this country. Even a recent opinion
by the Louisiana State Supreme Court appears to side more with critics.

The court wrote, "It is not an irrational inference that one who displays the Confederate Flag
may harbor racial bias against African-Americans."

Yes, but of course they'll never admit to the flag's racist subtext.

I've seen it many times in various cities in the South.

Hanging off a pickup truck..well we know what that means.
But in a place of historical context I see it as just a part of history, part of the history of that time.
In that context I think it's appropriate.

And IMO that historical context would not include such public edifices as state capitol buildings and the like.

I'd never have supported slavery, but it's also a symbol of the death and destruction the north (and Lincolns ego) visited on the south.

I have no problem with anyone displaying the stars and bars. My family fought in the civil war. Not because of slavery, but because "those damned yankees were down here trying to tell us what to do"

The civil war could have been prevented, if the federal government compensated every slave owner for their legally bought property. Granted, slavery is terrible and should never be practiced.

But if you go out and buy 100 Ford cars, and then the federal government outlaws your ownership in a few years, why should you not be compensated for your legally bought property, or allowed to be grandfathered in?

Like it or not, slavery was legal, slave owners bought them legally, before their government could simply take away all they had accumulated without compensation, they should have reimbursed them.

1. Outlaw the selling of any new slaves or newly born slave children in the United States. Outlaw the importation as well.

2. Give every slave holder a given rate, paid for by government tax dollars, for each slave and buy their freedom.

That would have prevented the civil war.

Instead, northern carpet baggers and business owners didn't want to buy the slaves, would have cost them money. Instead, a war in which they could sell ammunition and supplies to the army, they can make even more money.

One was patriotic, the other was war profiteering.

There was no need for the civil war, and most southerners fought against that level of government intervention without compensation.

I would disagree to a point. Texas has had 6 flags in it's history and they are on display at our state capitol along with a timeline history.
Texas was the 28th star added to the US Flag.

Oh no, another one of those re-fighting the Civil War 150 years later threads. What about the Southern agro-capitalist class who took their states out of legal relationship with the rest of the Union and truly should have known better? The words of Sam Houston about that foolishness were prescient -- he warned the secessionists that they were unlikely to prevail and that if they did, it would be at the expense of immense blood and treasure. Lincoln and the US government were obligated to maintain existing federal military installations at Fort Sumter and elsewhere. It was, if anything, Southern ego that created the conditions of war.

I guess they will go after the American flag next. I mean why not? Was it not the flag that flew over this country all of the years that black people were in slavery here? What is next on the agenda to take away free speech? A little at a time freedom is slipping away. Some applaud it.
