Was he likeable by classic conservatives? I was watching him in an old debate, and he seems like he would've got Tea Party support.

Unlike the current crop of Republicans he had a wicked sense of humor without coming off as banal. I doubt he thinks much of the tea baggers just as most mainstream Republicans had little regard for their predecessors, the Birchers.

I liked him. I don't recall his specific stances but he was a well respected man of integrity. He somewhat reminds me of Mike Huckabee.
