When business costs rise you cut overhead. That isn't political. It's common sense.

If some people had their way, corporations would never see positive operating income and growth, they'd always just be breaking even.

The announcement comes as medical device makers brace themselves for a 2.3 percent excise tax, called for on the industry by the Affordable Care Act. The tax is set to take effect in 2013.
This is a new, medical industry specific tax that's due to Obamacare.

Are you kidding? Stryker is a buisness and must generate a profit. Laying off 5% of the workforce benefits NO ONE and simply adds more to the unemployment roles. THe government should be in a role of trying to HELP buisness such that they can HIRE AMERICANS. Obama seems to want to do the opposite.

This is the gift of the Obama administration and the burden of Obamacare. Yet, liberals will still vote for him in 2012 (unless, of course, they lose thier jobs as well).

12 months and counting to the end of Obama. He and Carter can get together then and bash America and be bitter about thier failures.

Once again, no one forced Stryker to do anything. They selfishly did it on their own.

And so the company should lose profit and revenue, just to satisfy Obama? Do you understand that companies are in business to generate a PROFIT and are not there for their entertainment? Obama's policies force yet another company to lay off US workers and the liberals blame THE COMPANY, and not OBAMA????

When will the libs wake up to the fact that Obama is ruining the nation and that his policies kill jobs? Answer- Never. Fortunately independents do not want four more years of incompetence and economic misery and will vote out Obama, just as they voted him to office in 2008. They won't get fooled again.

Stryker, the Kalamazoo-based maker of artificial hips and knees, will cut 5% of its global workforce by the end of next year to reduce costs in the face of new fees on device makers required by the U.S. health care law.

The job cuts will reduce annual pretax operating costs by more than $100 million beginning in 2013, when the medical-device excise tax is scheduled to take effect, Stryker said Thursday in a statement. Stryker had more than 20,000 employees as of Dec. 31, according to Bloomberg News data.

By citing only a PART of Stryker's reason for the cutback, the post is misleading. Stryker's Press Release stated:

"The targeted reductions and other restructuring activities are being initiated to provide efficiencies and realign resources in advance of the new Medical Device Excise Tax scheduled to begin in 2013, as well as to allow for continued investment in strategic areas and drive growth despite the ongoing challenging economic environment and market slowdown in elective procedures."

So how much is related to new taxes, and how much to "drive growth?"

They also announced pre-tax restructuring charges of 150 - 175 million. How much will that save them in taxes, increasing their bottom line? More than half of it will be taken in 2011, 2 years before the new excise tax.

Stryker's stock price dropped about 50% from late 2007 to mid-2008. Is that Obama's fault too?

And their sales are at an all time high right now, as are their profits, and their stock price. And that is with them claiming that there is a "market slowdown in elective procedures" which use their products. Isn't it more likely that Universal health Care will cause an INCREASE in those procedures, thus driving sales even higher?

This is just Stryker doing what most corporations have been doing forever - increasing the bottom line. Don't go blaming Obama!

Stryker is cutting employees to cut costs. They make alot more than knees also. Originally started making hospital beds. Stryker is tightening their belts. BTW, you'd really be upset if I told you a micro screw to fix, saw a metatarsal fracture runs about $800.

So no Obama didn't make Stryker do anything. They are extremely well positioned GLOBALLY and the U.S. while large is not all of their market.

BTW Obama made 'Bama lose to LSU also...
