But you'd waste no time criticizing him if he said nothing at all.

See, this is the problem I have with conservatives: no matter what Obama does, he's wrong. Even if he's right, he's still wrong. Look, I get that you wish Obama didn't exist, much less wishing that he weren't president. But he won the election fairly and squarely. Get over it. Be American. Support your president when he's clearly right at least.

Sounds like President Obama is learning how to act like President! About time!
This is laughable! Obama lecturing the Chinese about acting like grownups? This from a guy who never accepts responsibilitiy for any of his failures but goes around blaming everyone else. Grow up, Obama!

What do you think we have been doing for decades up to this point? I'm not saying China is a "good-guy" when it comes to international commerce, I'm just agreeing to their rationale (which is one we would use as well). I would not support or adhere to any law/rule that we did not have a part in making. It seems to me that China is in the drivers seat and those in the backseat are complaining. Perhaps China will listen to the backseat drivers though. I wouldn't count on it. China adheres to real leverage, not nagging.

When Obama tells the Chinese to grow up what he is saying is don't act like the United States! Imagine if the Chinese tried to borrow or create tens of trillions of dollars . What a global financial cockup that would be!!

Ah, China. The age of the 'yellow peril' has returned. Only this time, the threat is viewed as one in the form of a nation state, rather than one in the form of Asian immigrants.

China doesn't play by the rules, but what developing economy in their right mind would? We can complain about the system all we want, but the reality is that China is only playing their role in a game that we, the United States, more than any other country, created. And we're probably doing a foolish thing by threatening to engage in an all-out trade war with what is now our defacto manufacturing plant.

Tariffs sound great - until you look at the history. It's a really bad idea to slap a tariff on products in a time of economic recovery. The fact is that Chinese wealth is already coming back to this side of the Pacific. It's not always apparent, but just because it's not apparent doesn't mean that it's not happening. In some places, the Chinese (as are other foreign nationals) are propping up otherwise moribund housing markets. They're also going to schools, and they're also skilled labor that can be used to help American companies gain footholds in developing markets.

FWIW, I do agree with Obama in principle that currency manipulation needs to end. There might be subtle ways to discourage that behavior, and maybe the threat of a trade or currency war isn't so bad as long as it's just rhetoric and nothing more.

But the Chinese have no reason to stop manipulating their currency until Bernanke & Obama do likewise.

Furthermore, his whining about ensuring 'fair' trade adds simply more proof to his undeniable ignorance all matters related to economics; when somebody starts whining about 'free trade' it's time to lock down your wallet, because somebody's obviously out to clean yours out ASAP.

Simply stated, there is no such thing as the 'just' price or the 'fair' price outside of the market price; there is only the 'free market' price, or the price at which the seller sells his product to a buyer at a price which is mutually agreeable to both parties.

Protectionism is also a disaster for everybody, including the consumer; if China wanted to inefficiently and absurdly shovel mountains of revenue into the manufacturing of solar panels for example, Obama's hilarious and stupendously ignorant decision to shovel equally absurd mountains of revenue to companies such as Solyndra in order to 'compete with the Chinese' simply made no sense.

His NLRB's equally asinine war against Boeing is also idiotic; all of the parts and/or sections (cockpit/fuselage/tail) of any Airbus jetliner are made in four different countries strictly for political reasons.

Can anybody on this board comprehend Boeing doing something equally ludicrous?

The unions in Washington state which declined to agree to Boeing's request that there be no strikes for ten years are solely to blame for Boeing's decision to build a new plant in a RTW state.

Small wonder that the right-to-work states have enjoyed substantially better improvement in both GDP and employment growth than the rust-belt states have.

Good for them.

Do aging retailers such as Sears and K-Mart require protection from exceptionally well run retailers such as Kohl's, Best Buy &/or Target?

Methinks the market has decided that the answer is a deafening and irrefutable no.

Honk if you miss Circuit City...or Montgomery Ward...or Braniff Airlines.....or....

It's not their law.
