I suppose whether the degree is worthless or not depends on the individual and how hard they pursue a career in their area of study. The engineering mech tech being on the list surprised me at first. But then I thought about it and realized how standards for engineers have changed in the last decade. In order to get hired as an actual engineer quality engineering firms are wanting to see field experience alongside a degree. Having actually worked in say the pipefitting, structural steel, aircraft whatever fields as well as the booklearning. So there's actual applied knowledge and skill behind the degree. Overcoming obstacles and what we in the trade call "design in the ditch" .
Truly, this makes for better engineers, who aren't shackled to theory and understand practical application and problems unique to a given project.
I suppose its because of the Mechanical Engineering Techonology designation as useless?
Any "Engineering Techonology" degree is considered "engineering lite" and is not considered engineering by certification standards. ET degrees do more harm than good to students because it shows that they either couldn't, or didn't want to make the cut as a fully accredited engineer. Who want's a half-ass engineer? No one. That's why it made the list.
Aren't there a lot of decent engineering technician trades out there?
Because those things wouldn't exist without those worthless degrees. #LiberalLogic
Not to the extent that we've come to enjoy them. Would you say, for instance, civil engineering or mechanical engineering would exist without degree programs in those fields? They might, but we'd get ****ty roads and machines that don't work that well. Some people are skilled as artists, linguists, actors, etc. So why not nourish those pursuits, too?
Well .. Bill Gates never finished college. So I guess you could say the best degree is no degree at all.
Bill gates is an extreme outlier. Let's not make such statements based on the experiences of a small handful of people.
