The Telegraph in the UK published a list of the best 12 degrees in terms of employment prospects:

1. Medicine and Dentistry

2. Education

3. Veterinary Science

4. Subjects Allied to Medicine - Pharmacy through to other Biomedical

5. Law

6. Biological Sciences

7. Mathematical Science

8. Languages

9. Engineering

10. Historical & Philosophical Studoies

11. Architecture, Building and Planning

12. Business and Administrative Studies

Graduate jobs: top 12 degree subjects for getting a job - Telegraph

The only real surprise being Historical & Philosophical Studies, although during recession I should also imagine Architecture, Building and Planning being hit particuarly badly as well as Engineering.

Which UK also compiled a list of the degrees with the best starting Salaries in November 2012, with Horticultural related Botany (Plant Science) at Number 3 and Chemical Engineering in at Number 4.

Top degree subjects for graduate starting salaries

1. Medicine: £31,383

Medical degrees have, and will no doubt continue to have, some of the best employment outcomes of any degree in terms of salary expectations and long-term prospects. Unsurprisingly, most graduates go into jobs within the health sector. If you're taking a shorter pre-clinical course, you'll need to continue on to further medical training to complete an accredited qualification, which explains why a high proportion of medicine grads are 'in further study' six months after graduation.

You could become a: general practice doctor, hospital doctor

Alternative options: clinical molecular geneticist, health service manager

2. Dentistry: £29,664

Dentistry qualifications are a savvy choice if a solid and stable career is top of your priority list. It's one of the very few degrees out there able to rival medicine for the strongest employability prospects and starting salary around. The recession appears to have barely touched early career options available for new dentists - almost all graduates get dental jobs on leaving their courses.

You could become a: general dental practitioner, hospital dentist

Alternative options: community clinical dental officer, corporate practice dentist

3. Botany (plant sciences): £28,591

Only a handful of students take this subject, but their expertise is in high demand from employers in a number of areas including crop engineering and biofuel research. A substantial number of plant science grads pursue careers in industrial and academic research, and so go on to further study six months after graduation.

You could become a: plant geneticist, soil scientist, project coordinator

4. Chemical, process and energy engineering: £28,219

With a shortage of chemical engineers in the UK, chemical engineering grads are in demand and starting salaries are good. That's especially the case for the oil and gas industry in Scotland, where chemical engineers started on an average of nearly £30,000 last year. Most graduates take a longer course that leads to an MEng – which is what you need to take if you want to be a Chartered Engineer.

You could become a: process development engineer, industrial manager, investment analyst

5. Operational research (management science): £26,776

With advanced analytical and problem-solving skills, operational research grads are attractive to a wide range of employers across multiple sectors including business and manufacturing. Typically, a large proportion of 2011 graduates are working in finance, but some pursue careers in management consultancy or IT.

You could become a: financial analyst, economist, accountant

6. Biotechnology and industrial biotechnology: £26,309

A new and emerging field of technology, further study is common for biotechnology grads as research jobs usually require a postgraduate qualification. Graduates are in demand from a wide range of employers, including pharmaceutical companies, food companies and the public sector.

You could become a: bioprocess developer, fermentation scientist, genetic engineer

7. Veterinary medicine and dentistry: £25,885

Most graduates get jobs – as vets – on graduation and starting salaries are much higher than average. Not surprisingly, they work in mainly rural areas (not so much in London!), but UK vets are also in demand abroad so if you fancy working overseas, this can be a great degree to choose.

You could become a: veterinary surgeon

Alternative options: veterinary researcher

8. Economics: £25,717

Almost half of 2011’s economics grads are now business and financial professionals, but some go into areas including public sector management, retail and marketing. It's also quite common for economics graduates to go into jobs such as accountancy which require you to take more training and gain professional qualifications.

You could become a: business analyst, account manager, insurance adviser

No wonder this nation is screwed! Check out how many students graduated with these degrees in the 2008-2009 timeframe! And to think that thousands of students are in DEBT over this crap!

Where is the degree for "Underwater Basket Weaving", also known as a Liberal Arts degree??

Any "Engineering Techonology" degree is considered "engineering lite" and is not considered engineering by certification standards. ET degrees do more harm than good to students because it shows that they either couldn't, or didn't want to make the cut as a fully accredited engineer. Who want's a half-ass engineer? No one. That's why it made the list.
Correct - companies want a "real engineer" and that's what these kids are finding when they look for jobs. The find out that "technologists" are not Engineers. I wonder if the College/Universities are selling this program as "easier" (which it would be) and "just as good" (which it is not) and just collecting the money. I feel sorry for the Grads that spent 4 years working on a degree that basically will qualify them the same as a 2 year vocational program.

Engineering Degrees are the top "guaranteed job" degrees in the country - Petroleum Engineering is the most in demand today and Mechanical Engineers are suited for most Engineering jobs short of the double E jobs.

This is from 2010, but it gives a snap-shot on what kids are looking for in their College Educations. The amazing thing to me is that Universities are actually offering these courses as part of a Degree Plan.

Hottest College Courses

Do these kids never understand that those who are hiring take a look at the course work?
Do the parents never ask "how is a course in Zombies going to further your career after college?"
We carefully discussed with our kids what their degree plan was and what courses they were taking every semester.

Value as in purely subjective quality based on ones preconceptions? Are you saying that a wedding gown selling for $15k has no value? Lol

All degrees are useless, jobs should simply function in the apprentice/master fashion. Just like with unions. No need to waste THOUSANDS of dollars just to sit in a cubicle and work on spreadsheets.

Very few cases actually need degrees. Less than 5%.

Even computer programmers can learn on the job. Simple training classes and certifications suffice for anything.

Doctors have reference books and most of the time they use the process of elimination when diagnosing patients. It is just a game of prescribing what the pharmaceutical companies get you the most pay on.

It is not rocket science. All college degrees do is provide a means for banks to make money.

I think I prefer to fly in Airplanes that were designed by Engineers with college degrees.
Ditto for any surgery - I'm thinking a Medical degree is a lot better than a 'reference book'.

Apparently there are still some folks around that don't understand the College Loans of today AND exactly who is making a lot of money on them.

Federal government books $41.3 billion in profits on student loans - Detroit Free Press

By the way - that $41.3 Billion profit in Fiscal Year 2013 was a drop from the profit in 2012.
