<scratching head> I have no marketable skills and can't afford to go to school to acquire skills. Please explain how "the opportunity is there".
Let's see...
There is the military to gain skills, experience and money for college
Job Corp to once again gain skills, experience and money for college
Volunteering to gain marketable skills, to network, and volunteering can help earn scholarships for school
Starting up own business
Oh, but I guess you are too good for any of those options

And there is an extremely SMALL percentage of Americans who are TRULY close to poverty...and I mean not even real close. Kind of like when the news talks about earth being "almost" hit by an asteroid that "passed within 202,000 miles of Earth"

I'm over 50, so both the military and Job Corps are out (neither will take me - how come there's a Job Corps for high-unemployment 18-24 but no Job Corps for high unemployment over 50?).
Yes I've done some volunteering but I haven't found any volunteering opportunities in the narrow field I'd like to get into (and none with transferable skills either).
Yes I'm trying to start my own business on a poverty-level shoestring and I think I'm very good at what I do but I need more money (capital) to become more productive and ramp up sales.

1. Not everyone is cut out for military life
2. Job Corp locations may not be near where you live the only one in my state is 3 hours away.
3. I have volunteered and while I glad I did it it did not lead to any job leads.
There will always be those that fall through the cracks if they let themselves.
Apply for a student loan; one can get up to $5500 the first semester with no income restrictions.
Fill out that FAFSA form as it costs you nothing.
There are plenty of people who got jobs skills and went to college and still are working low wage jobs because they could not find a job in area they went to school for.
Until I see Pernell Roberts or Sally Struthers making fundraising pitches to communities here in the United States then we don't have a poverty issue.
You are not in poverty if you have shoes on your feet, a roof over your head, food in your belly at least once a day, and access to an emergency room.
The one that gets me is donating to "adopt" a pet............When things get just a little worse here ,there will be no problem with overpopulation of "pets".........we will be eating them......... Actually dog isn't bad...... much leaner than beef.......
It means they most likely don't have $300-$600 per month for health insurance. And if uninsured, it's not just the $100 to see a doctor. Add in the prescription cost, the cost of any bloodwork done and if it's anything serious, a referral to a specialist, which becomes big bucks.
I went to a new doctor for a simple physical..........blood tests,no meds,I was fine. She took my blood pressure, pulse, felt around some, asked health questions for 10 minutes........Bill was $768.......lab was 400 something .rest doctors fees
But the $100 for their cell phones with unlimited text messaging is affordable?
It's all about priorities. People won't give up the cable service that goes with their thousand dollar televisions, but when it comes to their health care, they can't afford to pay anything.
actually, cell phones are cheaper than home phones........and how do you put a contact number on that resume without a phone.......plus most employers that decide to call you want you NOW..........or they move down the list and scratch you off.......
I agree, people have become comfortably poor, in the US. They complain about poverty, yet never miss a meal.
mmmmmmmmmm, then that guy I saw yesterday,by the on ramp, holding that sign saying "please help, hungry" was just a coverup? It had to be VERY uncomfortable to stand there in the rain holding that sign........
I am one of those evil student loan defaulters Reagan warned you about. I am paying almost 10 percent of my poverty level income, but that is not sufficient to get my loans out of default. (I would have to double that payment for nine consecutive months to get out of default, and that's not going to happen until either income or expenses improve. Funny that if I were not in default, I could qualify for an "affordable payment" program with a monthly payment of zero based on my income.)
For people with student loans in default - regardless of income - they have zilch, zero, nada.
How much of a poverty level income is a reasonable and affordable payment?
Silly question ? But, can't you work an extra job for the 9 months to take care of that one issue?
