A politician's main job is to get folks to like him/her so he/she will get elected. It requires no other skill or talent.

Why are they so respected, and looked up to? What do they really do?

Look at the US Congress, they have a license to steal by selling inside information on the equities market, land deals, pharmaceuticals, anything.

I can't stand politicians. They make me sick.

What is a politician but a glorified used car salesman?
They will always try to sell you a lemon because they know a sucker is born every minute.

Here's a joke:

A little girl asked her father, do all fairy tales begin with 'Once upon a time?'
The father replied, No, some begin with - 'If I am elected.'

"Politics is a necessary evil" Nicola Machiavelli. So by association politicians are necessary evil beings. To be safe we should never mention their title nor their names in the same breath as morals or ethics. The part of a politicians brain that deals with those concepts has been seriously damaged and probably cannot be repaired.

Wanting them to do something for you should make you hate them more since they rarely actually do anything.

Politicians are crooks. Every last one of them.

I think some local ones are actually pretty good. But on the federal level most of them seem to forget whom they serve.

No they know perfectly well who they serve...the corporate interest. They must realize where all that extra cash for campaigns is coming from.

Some politicians are sincere and honorable and some are the dregs of society.

Honest brokers: Amy Klobuchar, Ron Paul, Bernie Sanders

Pure slime: Mitch McConnell, Maxine Waters, Eric Cantor

Speaking of Cantor, did ya see where some old dude from Alabama got drunk , called him up and said he was going to rape his wife and kill his kids.
