Rick Santorum said this in Iowa and got lots of people angry: "I’m for income inequality. I think some people should make more than other people, because some people work harder and have better ideas and take more risk, and they should be rewarded for it. I have no problem with income inequality."
What do you think? Is he right that a logical person should believe that some people should make significantly more money than others based on how society views their contribution. Should an Accountant sitting in a comfortable office make twice what someone working road construction in the rain, heat and wind makes? Many people think the road construction worker should make more money because he is working harder than the Accountant.
So... what do you think? Do you believe in income inequality?
I dont have a problem with it. When one spends time and money etting an education or building a business they should make more money. But make it without gvmt subsidies or involvment.
I agree with him. There's no guarantee of success just because you were born in the United States of America. The only guarantee (assuming you can make it to the third trimester) is Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.
I have no problem with salary inequality. Some work is just worth more. What I object to is unearned wealth. The real welfare class in this or any other economy are the people with incomes derived from what they own not what they do.
If you are dissatisfied with your low income because you perceive yourself as "working harder" than someone who earns more than you, just say so.
There is a balance of wages.....not "income disparity".
In other words, people who have a very common skill set (manual labor, for instance) would have a lower income than someone with a higher skill set (lawyer, accountant, sales consultant, MD, etc.).
Very few people have the necessary skills to reach the top one percent, that's why they're in the top one percent.
My brother is a low skill worker. He works very hard physically. He has the intelligence to have increased his skill level, but since he never married, and has no children, he is okay with his job and lives within his means.
He has never earned more than $35,000 a year.
My cousin works at the same plant and is a supervisor. He doesn't work anywhere near as hard physically, but the mental stress is enormous.
He earns about 3x what my brother does. His skill set is greater than the floor guys.
My problen is with the guy that owns the factory and lives off the profit created by your brother and cousin without having to actually do anything.
Why? He did something right to be able to buy the factory or he got lucky and inherited it, meaning a family member of his did something right.
