Gay people are not accepted while homophobia is because many Americans believe the Bible is the literal word of God, and the Bible happens to contain the following verses:

1) Leviticus 18:22
2) 1 Timothy 1:10
3) 1 Corinthians 6:9
4) Leviticus 20:13
5) Romans 1:27

Homosexuality is also closely associated with cross-dressing in the minds of many, and that is not accepted either because Deuteronomy 22:5.

Honestly, they don't really give us a real reason why homosexuality is "wrong" other than "God said so" because the Bible was written by God, and that's what the Bible says, so that's what God says.

Something to that effect.

So why is this? Is homophobia a cherished American Family Value? Is hatred a cherished American Family Value? Maybe it is. Is a homophobe the ideal American citizen? The role model for others?
Why is that that homophobes regard gays as people with mental problems, but homophobia is not considered a mental problem?
I am not gay, but I'm not a homophobe either.
homophobes are normal!! there for we accept them!!!

Being gay doesn't mean you are indiscreet or love everything and everyone. The rest of the world is pretty much like that too.

As a 'Christian Nation' we know that god hates the homos, god hates the poor, and baby jesus loves the well-off/rich...C'mon where have you been the last 10yrs? If you are poor its because you haven't worked as hard as the well-off have!

And if you are gay...well thats just a sadistic decision you made one day...You woke up and decided you would rather cuddle next to a hairy man-beast instead of a beautiful petite blonde. Its like choosing to root for the Red Sox instead of the Yankees! And hopefully a Republican will become President and they can help us 'pray the gay away'!

Don't like it, visit a country that keeps their gays hidden away, and see what sort of cultural presence and richness develops!

Second, "their ideas of normalcy" are pretty much what most people not living in enclaves of ignorance can expect to experience in day to day life (or at least, the demographic most valued by TV advertisers --- which typically doesn't include ignorant rednecks, ghetto trash or old women clutching rosaries).

I would venture that most people know at least one gay person, or have that one gay cousin or uncle or aunt somewhere. Your "abnormal" is "reality" for millions and millions of Americans.
Just because most people know a gay person or even have a loved one that is gay, doesn't mean they have to accept the gay lifestyle. And they don't need to have that lifestyle forced down their throat to make gays feel better. I don't care what others legally do but don't expect me to endorse that behavior.

all of us share the same lifestyle? i didn't know that we'd met. since you claim to know what my lifestyle is.. why don't you tell me then?

if you're referring to my sexual orientation, it wasn't chosen and is a matter of REALITY. if you don't like parts of reality, or it's hard to deal with than you simply should vent this on God or Nature.. not the people born with the trait that they didn't choose that you don't like

Actually, it's that way because there is at least one gay in most peoples' friend circles, and those TV shows are depicting that.

Derp derp derp
Even if most people know someone who is gay it doesn't mean that every household has a gay person living in it like liberal TV shows. We are being force fed that lifestyle. I just turn the station to something more realistic.
