In 2006, he was re-elected by a plurality, not a majority. In 2010, he was only re-elected as the lesser of two evils in the general election after a primary where he won only because of a split in the "not Perry voters" between KBH and Debra Medina - the tea party candidate.
He didn't used to be so vocal about his anti-non-religion and anti-gay stances.
Perry has used "God" and "Christianity" a lot in his political career. That, and "-R", goes pretty much hand in hand here in Texas, a superb guarantee for a career in politics.
Old school politicians look for populism. They don't like to go about things that can be deemed unpopular. It is also why we see politicians focusing more on slogans and short term tactics. It is also what makes Romney a lot more appealing to the right wingers. Remember, this is the same guy who claimed to be a progressive when there was a need to say so. Do you really believe that he is being honest about being a conservative now?
I believe Romney will choose the highest bidder in every situation. He's a corporate raider. That is his business. Raiding businesses for profit is what he knows.
Because I consider them - especially Romney - to be better than Obama. We have two options and only two options. That's how this country works. It's sad, but it's reality. I don't live in Fantasy Land so, yes, I think in terms of who is the lesser of two evils.
On what ground? Because he says things you want to hear?
He has business experience. He wants to get rid of Obamacare. He wants to reform entitlements. He wants to reform the tax codes. He wants illegal immigrants to have to leave the country and go to the back of the line before being allowed back in legally. Need I go on?

I support a state's right to do something like Obamacare, as does Romney. Romney does not support Congress' right to enact such a program. Big difference.

In other words, he is hitting the nail right where any old school politician would. EVERY thing you mentioned is key to the right wing world. Except for tax reform, which even Obama supported and supports.
Having presented with what is in vogue, I think you should go on... may be there is something more than that in him?

Does Romney know that Obamacare allows states to come up with their own plan? He, obviously, thinks that individual mandate is a bad idea... even though he implemented that plan spelling "personal responsibility" then.
