I was born and raised in Massachusetts, in my twenties I moved all over the country, then I moved overseas for almost seven years and finally moved back to Massachusetts in September of 2010. Now I'm 33.
People always tell you about reverse culture shock when you move from a foreign country back to your homeland. I didn't really experience all that much until recently...it's the amount people infuse politics into every conversation.
Now I won't deny the fact that I love a good political debate. Hell, I joined city-data to have these types of debates. But, it seems like there's always someone in city-data or on a newspaper comments page who is looking to turn an innocuous article or discussion into some sort of liberal/conservative conspiracy.
Has it always been like this and I just forgot or is this something that changed while I was living overseas (2004-2010)?
Even at our Thanksgiving and Christmukkah dinners my mother and sister had to enforce the "no politics" rules so that the discussions wouldn't get out of hand. Even a simple conversation between my father (liberal), my uncle (conservative), my brother-in-law (liberal-conservative---means he wants and uses lots of services but doesn't want to pay for them) and me (rational thinker concerning homelessness turned into my uncle shouting at me and leaving the room and my brother-in law and father yelling at each other which subsequently resulted at my mother yelling at them to shut-up...good times good times.
Nobody wanted to listen to each other and nobody attempted to listen to the other side. I know that our situation wasn't unique but nonetheless, it's becoming frustrating.

No-one is really that interested in solutions, just winning.
Yep, I have relatives that must think who is talking the loudest is winning, to myself it is ape like behavior. I do not enjoy talking politics with anyone, usually they do not know what the hell they are talking about. I keep my views here on CD and it keeps me way more informed then listening to apes scream.
"In our age there is no such thing as 'keeping out of politics.' All issues are political issues, and politics itself is a mass of lies, evasions, folly, hatred, and schizophrenia. "

One thing that always cracks me up when I think about it is the time my wife asked my dad about how taxes were collected and distributed in the US. At the time she had only been in the US for a month or so and we were looking for work. In her country, income tax is collected centrally and distributed to the local states through the federal government. My father, instead of explaining that taxes here get collected by the feds and the state, he started in on "Well the Republicans do.... and the Dems want..."
She left the conversation more confused than before she had asked the question.
