Gas in Germany has always been much more expensive than in the US.
For decades German auto engineers worked on fuel efficiency and relative performance. This is a big selling point for many Europeans, although some can afford the gas hogs.
America's auto industry (until recently) has concentrated on horsepower and the 0 to 60 factor, very, very important for Americans. Americans don't want wussie cars.

In what other country can America hope to sell cars to the masses?
Nah, Chinese have such bad traffic they are in perpetual Gridlock (I recall earlier last year one major highway had a week long traffic jam). They don't need fast cars.
Their unions work with the companies and not against them like our unions do here in America. Also, they take more pride in their work, unlike our union work force in the American auto industry. The non-union transplant auto companies are doing very well in America.
