If you were curious about why scientists would run an experiment such as this, a quick google search of neutral sources would quickly inform you that the treadmill test (in actuality costing just $1,000 to create the equipment) is a new, more cost effective, less wasteful way to measure how healthy shrimp are in terms of being safe for consumption. This test is part of the larger 500K study to determine what level of bacteria in the water is unsafe, the point at which shrimp begin to become sick--too sick for humans to consume. It is kind of ingenious that they have discovered this new way to test shrimp health on live subjects and this method will be extrapolated to other animal-centred studies.

So your tax money is helping advance animal subject science, it is benefitting me, as a shrimp consumer, and is helping the multi-billion dollar shrimp industry that is the economic mainstay of so many people in the Gulf States and elsewhere in our country.

But by all means, let's halt the entire study because jogging shrimp look ridiculous. We can just keep testing shrimp the old expensive ways. Or not at all, and we can just take our chances at Red Lobster.

And Congress can't find any wasted money to cut from the budget ?
This is what is meant by smaller government. A government that knows where its money is going and can control the funds. Our governnment is too big and too far reaching and buried in so much red tape that one hand doesn't know what the other hand is doing and no one can trace the spending.

Because:

and we know that the federal government is more cutting edge, more cost effective and less wasteful than private industry

And even though I never eat the little buggers, it's important my money go to provide healthier shrimp for those that do.

Correct, if the cost of a shrimp goes up 2 cents each to pay , let those who indulge pay.

Why should it go up ? It's the government bearing the cost, not the shrimp industry. If it goes up that is money directly in the pocket of the industry; that money won't go to pay for the funds used for the study.
