People are quick to blame President Obama and the leadership in Congress for our terrible economy but isn't it possible that MOST of the blame is really just the people in America and how things worked out? Regardless of who is in power and the polices in Washington DC and who is in Congress or the White House, we were just due for a huge economic downturn for reasons completely out of governments control. Such as:

* The huge economic growth in China and their people's ability to do things cheaper and better.

* Telecommunications advances that allowed outsourcing to India, etc.

* A breakdown in our culture so people are just not as hard working and productive as before.

* A cultural breakdown in America where education is no longer important to large number of people anymore, which breaks down our education system, destroys our schools and makes us unprepared for the 21st Century Economy.

* Technology that allows 2 people to do the work it used to take 5 people to do, so companies just don't need to hire as many people as before, so unemployment is higher.

* Immigration, demographic trends that fills America with less skilled and educated workers.
--
So maybe the bad economy is not the fault of government but just a natural occurrence.

What do you think?

Much does have to do with the president and congress. We can see how the economy soared under Clinton by helping out the real job creators, small business where Bush tanked it by going back to the proven failed "trickle down" give everything to the rich and large corporations GOP fiscal stances.

Cheaper, yes, better, not by a longshot. The greedy corporations will go wherever they can pay people the lowest wages possible for maximum profits. China is their utopia as the factory workers get paid about .35 cents an hour, no benefits, slave labor conditions, next to no environmental standards etc,..The dems have tried a few times to pass legislation to stop sending our direly needed jobs overseas, but the GOP has blocked them every time.
In this case yes, the GOP absolutely sides with profits over jobs, the rich over the working man.
I always get a good laugh when right wingers throw the "communist!" this and that nonsense, when it's the GOP and their greed turning communist China into the world's next superpower.

For educated IT and other technical and computer related jobs, India is where it's at for profits. In the US these people would get paid $15-20 an hour or more, in India about $3

Sure I think many people have become more lazy, but there are many more especially in this economy that will work any job for any pay just to be employed.

I think education is still very important to most, but yes to many especially in the GOP think education is unimportant or some kind of liberal conspiracy and all they need to know in life is how to carry a bible, shoot a gun, and where to vote republican.
Another thing to consider is with so many jobs being shipped overseas, GOP attacks on the teachers and what not, people with tens of thousands of dollars in student loan debt, go to school for years and years to end up working a crappy job. Employers are paying less and less, and people who are very overqualified are working positions that are well below their standards.

This is true as well with technological advances, computers and machines are taking over for what workers use to do.

Illegal immigration is an epidemic that is really hurting the nation as well. The GOP loves them as for what jobs can't be sent overseas, illegals will do it here. They are the perfect workers that never complain, do grueling labor for next to no pay, no benefits, etc,..Obama has been stepping up to the plate arresting and deporting more illegals than any other president in history, but he's still got a long way to go.
The main problem is the illegal alien issue is usually well at the bottom of the importance meter of issues for the american people, and the politicians do really nothing to address it likely because of this.

The government has a ton to do with it. Really it shows loud and clear the GOP are out only for maximum profits to the rich and their corporate masters. They say to hell with the middle class and the american people, where the dems at least try to keep jobs here and fight for the middle class.

It was the Dems that rescinded e-verify in the stimulus bill just to name one instance of allowing jobs to be offshored.

The trade agreement is a bi partisan cluster f*** and both parties our on board with globalization. It is sad that someone thinks the {D} party has tried to do something about it. If you look at closely they trot out the trade issue in election years. The last being in 2010 where they only had about 80 co sponsors for a House bill, where is all those {D}s? they still had the majority and they could only muster 80 co sponsors. Do you see the problem there?

The trade issue is a political football that is used to easily to dupe the very ignorant, those trade deals are never going anywhere. The {D} party is living proof where they had the majority in both chambers and Obama.

I know "facts are stubborn things" but if you think the GOP is in any way to keep jobs here, gives even the slightest amount of care to the middle class, and isn't just out for themselves you're terribly wrong.

I would have added the impact of war, 10 years and counting, to the OP. And I blame the government for that.

If it was easy, you would have backed up your argument.

If we blame "the government" aren't we really blaming ourselves? Why the disconnect? As soon as we think of the government as "them" or "it", we separate it from ourselves and treat it as an enemy. That's no way to get things done and solve problems. Either we learn to embrace the idea that government is US, or we will forever be beating our heads on walls.

Yes, the government is at fault but only partially. I would ascribe a large portion of the failures to the elite who ultimately pull the strings, those CEOs and billionaires who have the means to control what happens despite our republic form of representation. Like they say in personal relationships, nobody takes advantage of you without your permission. When we go around saying it's somebody else's fault, we completely lose all our power in the situation.

We need to stop warring and start teaching.
We need to stop immigration since we can't employ our own citizens.

To the OP, I don't think this is natural, I think it's by design, nefarious country-destroying design.

I stated FACTS. The 2009 stimulus bill had e-verify in it to keep jobs here and to make sure US citizens go them. It also said no H1-B visas which also got removed.

The Dems removed the e-verify and H1-B restrictions at the last minute in the dead of night. How's that for politics ?

You can't put that one on the GOP no matter how hard you try to spin it because they came out very vocally against removing those two items.
Thank Reid/Pelosi for caring so much about American citizens.
