Instead of preparing kids for the job market and the real world colleges and universities are nothing but corporate rackets. Their entire existence relies on bribing, selling, and otherwise marketing the hell out of what they think will attract students to their schools. Notice how they make no guarantees ever about finding a job or employing graduates? LOL.........like everything in America higher education has become nothing but big business where schools can't even function without making huge profits from lying to kids that if they go to college they will attain the American dream. nothing could be further from the truth. College is a complete and utter joke nowadays for all but the most basic and technical knowledge and skills. Even then there are many other options available and they won't cost you $100K in student loans. The problem with college is everyone and their brother and sister is going and the coursework and priviledge reserved for only the brightest and hardest working has been so dumbed down it's pathetic. And who's paying for all these kids to go to college? Why our government and the banks of course........creating an entire new "business bubble" that is already imploding. Again you've got an entire cornerstone of American society that has been run roughshod over by Wallstreet, banks and our government with all their fiat paper money.

But why is everyone flocking to college? Because the corporations have brainwashed everyone and society into believing that you need a bachelor's or a MBA to punch numbers into a computer or sit behind a desk and answer the phone. Marketing? LOL.......Advertising? Communications? Not only that while Corporate America is brainwashing everyone by demanding they have a college degree they have destroyed wages, unions, and prosperity in this country. Americans love getting screwed! It's the same story for the last 50+ years under all administrations.

If the students are being sent into the field to collect data, take observations and create a report on OWS, I don't see anything wrong with it. In fact, it seems it would be a good exercise in critical thinking if it's done right.

God know critical thinking is in short supply (see: CD Forums).

The reason so many graduates cant find jobs is because their Majors in Liberal Arts crap isnt rewarded in the real world. You might want to brush up on your Math and Science type degrees or maybe some kind of Medical technician degree if you want to have a job waiting for you when you graduate. And even then its no guarantee.

And, we've been convinced that the sole purpose of education is to prepare one for the job market, from pre-K to post graduate.

That's always been a part of education, but once upon a time it was also thought that education improved the individual and created good citizens.

Now.....well, now it's just to make drones for global corporations.

American students even at the college level don't need to be wasting time on that nonsense. They need to be thoroughly well versed in mathematics, sciences, chemistries, etc. Most college grads don't come out of college that much brighter and smarter than they did in high school unless they are majoring in the hard sciences and math oriented fields. Business majors? As if all American society needs is more corporate lackeys trying to reinvent the wheel with the next facebook or selling the American consumer more Chinese junk they don't need through billion dollar advertising and marketing budgets. What does an MBA mean anymore? Does an MBA teach you how to bring manufacturing back to this country? Or does it further trivialize the American economy by selling trinkets and crap made in China in the name of "start ups" and TV specials.

No room for the arts, the social sciences, theology, creative writing, philosophy or anything else which might make a well-rounded individual?

I submit to you that's the problem now. We have far too many graduates who know all about the mechanics of making money, but little or nothing about being a human being.

That's counting in college graduates from back when going to college meant something.

4.4% isn't really all that low an unemployment rate. I bet the rate for new graduates is higher than that of those from 15 or 20 years ago.

The problem is that people started equating college with vocational training. Depending on what your viewpoint, you may find college a complete waste of time and money or a very rewarding, fulfilling experience.

In my view, college should be about intellectual and academic pursuits. We need to have a separate vocational track for those whose main purpose is to acquire job skills and training.

I will not pay for my childrens college if they are not in pursuit of a degree in one of the 4 professions. Medicine, Law, Engineering, Accountancy.
